Topic Dog Boards / Health / Bleeding 18 days after mating

Hi there

My bitch was mated 18 and 16 days ago. Her season finished a week ago but this morning there were a few drops of blood - not really dark red. It seems to have stopped now and she is fine in herself. Is this something to worry about?

Thank you

Well, it could be the end of her season - often dogs will stop bleeding (mostly) during the fertile time and then bleed again at the very end.

Or, it could be a sign of pyometra. Which is a risk after breeding because you are putting non-sterile stuff into the uterus. So just keep a close eye on her and if anything else begins to seem a bit 'off', then you might want to take her for a check up at the vets. They will run bloods and potentially an ultrasound to see if it is pyo.

I had just one who after having two successful matings, returned to a coloured discharge.  I was worried of course, but she was well in herself despite being the only one of mine who ever did this, mated or not.  She went on to have an uneventful pregnancy and 9 super puppies, from which we kept 3 who came back to the UK with us, and others.

Yes I'd wondered about a Pyo so it may be a good idea to keep a close eye on her over the next few days, and if at all concerned, involve your vet.  Fingers X'd all will be well.

Thank you. She’s been absolutely fine all day and no sign of any more bleeding but I’ll keep a close eye on her and take her to the vets if it continues. This will be her second litter if all goes well and she was fine last time.
