Covid is common in pet cats and dogs whose owners have the disease, research suggests.

'Swabs were taken from 310 pets in 196 households where a human infection had been detected. Six cats and seven dogs returned a positive PCR result, while 54 animals tested positive for virus antibodies.

"If you have Covid, you should avoid contact with your cat or dog, just as you would do with other people," Dr Els Broens, from Utrecht University, said.

"The main concern is not the animals' health but the potential risk that pets could act as a reservoir of the virus and reintroduce it into the human population."

The authors of the study said no evidence of pet-to-owner transmission had been recorded to date but it would be difficult to detect while the virus was still spreading easily between humans.

Most infected pets tend to be asymptomatic or display mild Covid symptoms.

I assume this is Covid 19 - Coronavirus has been known in dogs (and cats?) for many years.

So 67 animals out of 310 - about 22%. Is that enough to make it “common”?

If they’re living in the house with you and breathing the same air isn’t it obvious that you would find it on them ? I thought it was.

Corona virus has been around for many years. It has four garden varieties and it is known as the common cold or influenza a and influenza b. From the AMA encyclopedia published 1989,page 1051.Corona is a cold.

So if you have a cold keep away from your pets because that is what corona virus is!!

Covid19 is NOT a cold or influenza virus.

Colds are caused by a Rhinovirus or a Coronavirus, but NOT Covid19 coronavirus

Influenza is caused by a different virus

All three are upper respiratory conditions, but Corvid19 affects organs in the body unrelated to respiratory organs.

You quote a paper from 30 years ago, before Covid19 evolved, rendering it inappropriate.

Covid19 is not a form of the common cold. It is a form of virus of the genus Coronavirus, not directly related to the viruses that cause the common cold

I never use Google search engine. If I am going to search for something I use Duck Duck Go..but I didn’t get that info from a search engine.

Still a search engine, better to research from hard copy & then look up online to share to others online.

The world of science has changed greatly in the last 30 years, especially in medicine. For example the OxfordAstraZeneca vaccine is a Non-Replicating Viral Vector vaccine, 30 years ago these did not exist.

Who mentioned vaccines..my original post was about the corona virus which has been around for many years and I didn't get that imfo from a search engine.

So you believe that Covid19, the common cold & flu are all the same based on a 30 year old paper.

I have acute allergic rhinitis which has some of the same symptoms of the diseases, however it is not related in anyway & is certainly not caused by a virus, but using your logic(ie same/similar symptoms) it is also related.

One reason there will never be a 100% cure/prevention for the common cold is because it is a multicausal condition.

I don't know what your scientific background is nor what your experience of study/knowledge of viruses is. You will of course will be aware they lack cellular apparatus(cytoplasm and cell organelles) that makes them dependant on a living cell to multiply.& are either contain RNA or DNA, but not both.
