My dog had ai 19th May and 21st May she is 6 and half weeks now, she had scan at 5 weeks which was told she is empty no pups but she had all the signs, lost appitite, sickness, sleeping alot, she has just started to get increase in her appetite, weight gain, licking alot like she feels sick. I have this morning felt little poping feeling but unsure if this is pups or gas lol. She is due for a second scan this week but it's driving me mad. Im unsure how to add a picture of her belly now x

It depends entirely on how good the person scanning is. I have experienced really bad ones ("I can see one or maybe two pups" -10 were born) and really good ones ("I can see 8" -8 were born) but I've never had pups being missed entirely. I currently have a pregnant bitch with a large litter (the scanner who is excellent said 6) and I felt little light taps at 44 days which then got stronger day by day. She is today 53 days and you can clearly see the pups move when she is laid down. Had it been a single pup it would be much harder to tell.

What does her vulva look like? I'd expect it to be larger than normal with possibly some clear discharge in a pregnant bitch at that stage.

Thank you for your reply, one day she seems quite big next she's just got a little pot belly when lieing down lol. Her vulva seems normal size she dos keep having little bits of clear discharge, past 3 days she's been cleaning herself alittle. Not sure if the popping I'm feeling is gas or pups she would be 45 days from 1st AI today. Congratulations on your dogs pregnancy x

This is why I have never gone with scans    Even if I was told no, I'd still hope and be waiting until the due date.  And then, probably go for x-ray to confirm empty if nothing happened.

I have one of mine who up to 5 weeks, looked easily carrying a reasonable sized litter.   However, as the weeks passed, she didn't seem to increase at all.  She had one (bitch) puppy by C.Section (she was big) but no sign she'd had any that she'd absorbed.  That girl, who I had high hopes of as a brood bitch, had 2 puppies in her first litter, and then this singleton.  The best laid plans.  We had her far more successful litter sister (made her UK title which for me was a huge plus as she was Canadian bred and one who came home with us) who I never felt was going to be such a good brood bitch as her sister.  She had 9 puppies albeit because the vet delayed doing the 'Section she too needed, only 4 survived.  But that's a story I've put on here before.......

Hoping you do have puppies!!

Never will scan again you think it would put your mind at rest but this has caused more stress lol. Awww I've heard lot about singletons that's what's worrying me now. Wow 9 puppies strange how 2 dogs from one litter can have such different number litters x

A friend once had a bitch scanner by a vet as empty. As time went on They kept looking at her thinking 'she sure looks pregnant'. They took her to a local scanner who found 5.

We had two failed attempts with my own. Scanner said none and none were there. The second one I was convinced she was but nope.
Then the last try we got a sigleton.

Thank you for your reply, thats how I feel with my girl this past week I'm sure she is pregnant. I'm so unsure of what I'm feeling its like little taps but I'm thinking should feel more then that at this stage 45 days. I thought scanning would help but it seems to just leave more unknown. She was mobile scanner been doing it since October 2020, She did say there's an empty sac when I asked her where she said she couldn't find it again. Sure time will tell could be a phantom I suppose x

Can you find a scanner from the VIS website to do a more detailed scan and show you what's what in what they are seeing or not?

Hi I've just had a 2nd scan yesterday morning. She would have been day 45, used someone els and thay said no pups although she has a black sac but nothing in it, his partner thought she seen a little flickering like a heartbeat but the man said that if it was a pup it would have been in a sac. she's looks and is acting just like a pregnant girl would including discharge, but thay said discharge is the only one thing that's keeping us questioning as that's the one symptoms thay don't usually have with a phantom. He said to keep an eye on her as could be a singleton hiding but with her being a medium breed he said he's sure a singleton would be seen. Dos standing up make a difference to scans? She won't lie down she is being scanned just stood up. Guess it's a waiting game but I think it more then likely is a phantom. X

They're always scanned for pregnancy standing up.

The discharge would be caused by hormones - the same hormones which would be causing the phantom. So that doesn't really help you one way or the other either.

I think you just have to wait and see and be ready in case...
