hi everybody! Ok-this might be a daft question, but does anyone know why my little collie has grown hairy back legs this summer? Im not really worried, Id just like to know why! she looks like she has hairy trousers on from the back! she had normal collie legs up till now! sorry if you think Im being silly!Shes 11 years now and is spayed, thanks, pam.

By any chance do you mean a patch of fluffy dry hair on the outside of her back leg, about half way up? My Silkens get this when neutered, boys and girls, I pluck it out, the rest of their coats are beautifully shiny - this stuff is dry and horrible looking

thanks for replying!no,its not really like that-more a big overgrowth of her normal hair.she has quite a thick curly coat-maybe her legs took a while to catch up!the hair, seems to be all over the lower leg, matching in with the hair on the upper leg,but it does look fluffy.I,ve just tried to examine it cos shes next to me on the settee, but she got up n went! I,d love to be able to send a photo but i never learned how!thanks again xxx

Interesting.  Years ago I had a Long Coat Chihuahua spayed.  Her coat went all dry and fluffy at the back. It was horrible.

It's a strip of dry, fluffy hair about 3 inches long, an inch high on their second thigh, every neutered silken gets it. It's really easily plucked out, very weird.

It does sound like ots to do with spaying and her getting older .( best guess ) so hormones
Brookes coat as do many became wooly after spaying but I've noticed that recently her legs are even more wooly than usual.she is 10
Oddly atm where she was shaved for her back op the area is growing back very nice, wavy but not wooly .
So I currently the original wavy coated retriever x flat coat !!

FWIW when we had to have two of our oldies castrated, both costs turned soft, and 'fluffy'/heavier (Bassets) which was another reason why I regretted having to have them castrated but in both cases, their prostrates flared so it was best done.

i guess it is hormone related then!she looks so sweet-stumping along in front on her chubby little legs, next to the other two with their elegant legs! thanks everyone!xxxxx
