Some advice needed please. Puppy went off to new home at 10 weeks having had Nobivac DHP and Lepto 2. I live in N. Derbyshire, pup is in Bath. Vet in Bath insisting on restarting Lepto using Lepto 4 (2 shots). Which is obviously going to impact on pups socialisation and ability to attend puppy class. I’m not keen on Lepto 4 anyway, but apparently Lepto 2 cannot be found anywhere in the area. What advice would you give them? They are first time puppy owners and are keen to do the right thing by puppy.

I never give either Lepto vaccinations, dogs have died with hours of been given a Lepto shot & apparently the vaccine efficacy lasts for less than a year

In the UK for some obscure reason it is considered a core vaccine. Yet most vets rarely see a case of leptospirosis & those they see are usually vaccinated dogs. Leptospirosis is much more widespread in the US

I'd be tempted to start phoning round all vets in the new owners area- bound to be one with required jabs

If they cant get lepto 2 I would not worry and certainly not start again with lepto 4
I hope the vet doesmt mean the whole course of course vaccines are to be started again either.

I don't give any Lepto - just have the DHP - all vets should stock L2, I think they're just wanting more money from you - hold your ground!

My puppy owners have asked me to pass on their grateful thanks for the ‘sanity check’. They have located a vet in a nearby town who has Lepto 2 and will now do all her second vaccinations. This will mean they can take her to the puppy class they are booked into. Thank you, of course, from me too.

Sadly not all vets stock L2 vaccines and then you have the arduous task of finding a vet which stocks the same brand as which you started. I tell all owners to find a vet, doesn't need to be their own as they can go to any vet for the vaccines and find one which stocks L2.
My main vet stock both, contacted a nearby village vet and they only sock L2 as they don't like the risks for the L4, I found that refreshing

The vet used for first vaccinations only uses L2, which is fine. However, they were going to use Vanguard 7 for the rest. I’ve never heard of this before and both sets of new puppy owners couldn’t find vets that used it, where they live, for the second dose. I therefore asked for Nobivac to be used in order to avoid the ‘you’ll have to start again’ argument, which seems to be increasingly common.

Has anyone else encountered Vanguard 7? I felt it was putting an awful lot into an immature system all at once and was happier with Nobivac, but is V7 the way things are going?

At work we've occasionally used Vanguard when our suppliers haven't been able to obtain Canigen (our brand of choice) or Nobivac (compatible with Canigen). The problem with Vanguard is that it requires a full annual vaccination, as opposed to the others which, after the first full booster after a year from the puppy course, only give the DHP element every 3 years, with only the L2 element being annual. (We only give L4 if the dog is likely to be going overseas, or if the owner insists.) V7 is definitely much less commonly-used brand.

I wish I’d known about this forum six years ago when I was advised to restart a vaccination course with my boy. My vet used  Nobivac, the pup had had Canigen and I didn’t know they were compatible then. Thank you JG for your input.

Vanguard caused aniphalactic reactions in 2 dogs I knew.

My last vets used Vanguard. They only used to notify us of vaccination due every 3 years, with Lepto 2 every year. Vanguard also had something called Adult restart which could be used in any dog over 10 weeks.

My new vets have Nobivac, also Lepto 4 (which I don't fancy).

I don't give any Lepto vaccinations at all. I stopped when my older dogs stopped getting annual vaccinations - meaning they were effectively unprotected for Lepto for over half their lives with no problems whatsoever. (Despite living with a couple rats nests in the garden that had to be dealt with and near marshes, where they are exercised.)

At that point, I didn't see the sense in vaccinating new puppies I owned with Lepto either - since I had no intention of vaccinating them with it every year through their lives anyway, so why give it just the first year? And why give it alongside all the other vaccinations when it is the greatest cause of side effects? Then I learned that in North America, Lepto vaccinations are not given!! If you took your new puppy to the vet, you'd have to specifically request Lepto because it is a non-core vaccine and you wouldn't be told about it otherwise.

So I give just DHP. My vet uses Nobivac and reconstitutes the vaccine with Nobivac solvent, but my understanding is you can use sterile saline if a vet claims not to have that.
