Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Advice needed about leaving pups

Hi,

My bitch is due her first litter anywhere between 12th and 19th July.

We've just had a close family member announce their wedding on 7th August, which would require us to leave the mum and the pups with a trusted friend who has experience with dogs as she used to work in a dog rescue centre. The wedding is in another part of the country and would require us to be away for 3 to 4 days potentially.

I already feel uncomfortable about the idea of leaving the pups, has anyone ever done this successfully?

If its overwhelmingly "no" then I'll go with my gut and send my apologies.

Thank you in advance.

If it were me, I'd stay with my bitch and puppies.  It's unfortunate that this wedding is when it is, and it might be different if you could just get a sitter for the day (depending on how mum is with strangers around her puppies) but to be away for several days - no way, as far as I'm concerned.  What would you do if you get a phonecall to say it's all gone pear-shaped?

Others may disagree but this is my opinion.

I have to agree with MamaBas. There’s no way on this earth I’d leave them, it’s too easy for things to go wrong and then where would that leave your friendship if something unexpected happened.

Follow your gut . U and your friend would be devasted if something happened and they  were in her care . I would stay with the pups  and tell the rest of your family go .
Just to add i don't breed but from what I have learned and feel they need u

They will be 3 - 4 weeks old by then, needing to be fed 4 times a day and cleaned out frequently, as well as played with.

If Mum is sociable and knows this person well, and they are up for the hard work, then I don't see a problem.
