I have a bitch that has small litters(no more than 3) not something I'm used to with her being large breed and always blood tested before breeding. This will be her last litter so I was going to start giving her wheatgerm oil as I have heard that helps. But a friend has said any wheat germ oil will do and another said just use vitamin e tablets as same thing. Anybody able to say what would be best.

I wouldn't use either. FWIW

Nor me.  One of my girls only managed to produce 3 puppies from her 2 litters!  The first was of 2 (outside stud dog), the second of 1, from my own not directly related stud dog).  On the other hand, her sister had 9 from her one and only litter (the vet messed up so there were only 4 survivors) and there was I thinking the sister would be the more prolific/better brood bitch   It was just the way it was.

I would just say that not having big litters would be ok with me, provided I get what I'm hoping for from the small numbers.  With me, it's more about quality than quantity and at least with my small litters, I didn't have to stress over finding good homes!!

Yes. One of the big advantages of keeping toy dogs.

Just checking, are you using the CHV vaccine at mating and before birth? I know that has been associated with smaller litters.

No she is not getting the CHV. She also had 18mths break between pups

Well that could be the problem,  I'd definitely get the CHV vaccines before buying a bottle of wheatgerm

Edited to say my previous post should say that the canine herpes virus has been proven to be responsible for infertility, reabsorption, smaller litters and pups not thriving, not the vaccine. Has your girl already been mated?

No she not be mated she is a great mother with good size pups. Sorry should have said She had a litter with my friend(her breeder)and had CHV and only had 2 pups he used an outside stud. She has been with me about 18mths i used my stud and got 3. So this will be her last litter and thought I would try something natural and if I get a couple more great if not thats also fine.
