Topic Dog Boards / Health / question about the EU Pet Passport
- By onetwothreefour Date 26.05.21 14:41 UTC
Does anyone know:

When people living in Europe take their 8wk old pups to the vet for 1st vaccinations and chipping, does the vet record this in the blue Pet Passport booklet? And then add the rabies vaccination later on, when it is done? OR does the vet record 1st vaccinations like UK vets do, on some other health card - and is the blue Pet Passport only issued later when the rabies is done?

I know that at the back of the Pet Passport there is a section for 'Other vaccinations'. So I wondered if it is conventional in Europe for vets just to use Pet Passports to record these, and the chip number - even before the rabies jab is done? Or is the blue book withheld until the rabies is done? (I know the latter is what used to happen in the UK but not sure Europe does the same.)

My two foreign boys have all their vaccinations, worming etc recorded in their EU passports(one Portuguese & one Romanian)

Yes everything was recorded in my girl’s passport, including all worming treatments, not just the one needed for travel.

Thanks - just to check - I can see how any treatments/vaccines *after* the rabies jab would be recorded, but were the vaccines given before the rabies also recorded in there? (The 1st DHP/Lepto?)

Yes all & any vaccination or treatment is recorded

Thanks. That's interesting then. So when we were part of Europe, European vets were recording everything in Pet Passports whilst UK vets were saving Pet Passports for...well, actual Pet Passports and rabies jabs.

It makes so much more sense to record it all in one place.

As others have said, it was everything from birth including worming (although assumed it was administered by breeder!)

When I lived in Spain the Passport was the only document I have had issued and yes, absolutely everything was recorded in it.

When I sorted out importing a dog at 10 months from USA (it was before 2012, and dog had to wait 6 months after titre test), I asked about vaccination card, and got blank looks.

Seems they don't do vaccination cards. Many breeders vaccinate their own puppies too.

Looks like they are pushing ahead with a ban on imports under 6 months which is a real shame for serious breed enthusiasts :(

Oh I do hope that happens; it'll help solve the problem of the enormous quantities of illegally-imported puppies from the Eastern European puppy farmers.

Yes it will, but I think it will have a huge impact on the ability to keep some breeds sustainable unfortunately.

It won't stop them, they will simply smuggle the puppies in with no paperwork at all. Not hard to sell pedigree pups via the free ad pages, chips can be inserted & false information recorded.

The only people who will be affected are responsible breeders/owners who will abide by the law.

All the laws brought in to protect & legistrate for dogs are flouted daily & nothing happens to the offenders except a slap on the wrist.

Plenty of licensed puppy farmers in UK with dogs in appalling conditions in UK, that allowed to ply their trade unfettered

Where did you see that?

That would really suck. I could JUST about get my head around 15wks, but 6 months.... phew, I wouldn't want to get a pup at that age.

Brexit is destroying the UK.

Why can't they focus on ensuring dogs are tested for brucellosis before import and other diseases they risk bringing back to the UK. It's not the age which is an issue.

This is another view - I'd not want to import a puppy at 15 weeks, if it includes a long haul flight especially.  Yes I exported a puppy to Switzerland from the UK.  I flew out with him (he was still in cargo) when he was 4 months.  I'd not have let him go at a younger age.   He was a happy outgoing pup too.

My foundation bitch came out to us from the UK to Canada, at 5 months and a second puppy, a male, came to us out there,  at 7 months.  Mind you, with my main breed, buying at a younger age would be a lottery as the breed develops differently to other breeds, eg terriers where what you see as a young puppy, is usually pretty much what you get.  Bassets can change drastically through the first year.

I wholeheartedly agree that the importing of young puppies in 'batches' needs to be stopped.  Importing young stock for their bloodlines, by legitimate breeders is another matter.

Brexit is destroying the UK.

Yup. I’ve yet to see one positive impact.

Importing a puppy at 15wks doesn't have to involve a long-haul flight. Not sure what that's got to do with the price of eggs. It can involve a car journey with stops whenever you like and a quick 1hr Chunnel to the UK. It was pretty easy before Covid and Brexit.
