Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / New Born Pups going cold and stiff?
- By Debbiedibbles [gb] Date 09.05.21 07:41 UTC Edited 11.05.21 12:36 UTC
My bitch has had 11 puppies on Friday, last night we noticed one going cold and stiff, we haven't experienced this before. We gave him 1 teaspoon of sugar and 3 teaspoons of water, then goats milk. Early this morning we have 2 doing the same thing. 1 has gone stiff cried and stopped breathing I gave him mouth to mouth and rubbed him vigorously. I need some proper advice please I've got my 9 year old in tears and me too, we are just desperately trying to keep these puppies alive.

Are they warm enough? Heating on in the room and added heat pads or heat lamp?
They can't feed properly if they are cold.

Are they hydrated enough too, have they fully stimulated as well with pee and poos? Sometimes the bitch doesn't get them going and constipation kicks in.

Sorry I popped out to get formula for them.
How do I know if they are hydrated enough?
They have both pood when I gave them the sugar water

Yes with the 'tenting test' re hydration.
Yes re heating - newborn puppies cannot regulate their own temperature so it's very important to maintain a good steady warmth in the whelping box.   We used a brood lamp hung over the box so if mum needed out, the newborn puppies didn't loose a heat source.

Were/are the puppies quiet because there is always the Fading Puppy Syndrome to consider - puppies like that cry, sounding like seagulls.

That's what 1 did this morning, but I got it back, a couple are still dehydrated a little bit, so just tried to give him sugar water and milk, my girl wasn't happy at all, she physically took the puppy from me and went back in her whelping box, she never carries them in her mouth ever.
We are so worried about these puppies

Update!!
All now suckling from mum, managed to get the weaker ones stronger and they are latched on and feeding as we speak

That's good news. It sounds as though they were chilled. Make sure the whelping area is very warm and that the bed is draught-free, but that the bitch can find a cooler spot if she needs to.

Hope they stay good Debbie. My heart was in my mouth as I read this. Must be so stressful.

Hi all,
Sorry I've not responded it's been an absolute awful 3 days, little Troy as we named him one of the poorly boys. Took a turn for the worse early hours this morning. I literally haven't left the puppies or mum for longer than 20 mins to do the school run.
I got him to the vets at 3am then I fed him 3 times over, he had his last feed at 8.30 this morning and very sadly he just slipped away at 9. Absolutely heartbreaking to see, but my gut told me to just let him go. We are burying him in the garden shortly. The others have all been checked, and mum at the vets today and all OK, just got 1 on hrly feeding then bk to mum.
This is the last time I will breed, this has upset us all as a family
