As some of you know I moved house last year.

The house is Open Plan.

It's end of Terrace with Conservatory East Facing and the Kitchen South Facing.

The kitchen is too hot for the dogs, and has units all round.

There is nowhere for a dedicated dog sleeping area, especially for multiple dogs.

As you step out of the conservatory there is a personal door into.a single garage 2.5m x 5.5m.

The previous owners had used it for their stock ( they had a market stall).

So the shelving has all my dog stuff, and I have my freezer in there, plus two large plastic dog houses, and raised beds between, topped with soft waterproof dog cushions.

Last winter I lined the walls with cardboard dog food and removal boxes, (as temporary insulation) and covered the floor with rubber backed mats.

I have used an oil filled radiator for background heat to keep it above 10'C, and used a Fan in Summer.

The opposite wall has plastic containers for dog and bird food storage, and a ttable for grooming.

I had planned to have it converted this Spring, but Covid put paid to that.

The dogs are happy in their ' bedroom', where they are not underfoot.

Next week I am having the roof changed to EPDM.

Also update Electrics with some extra sockets and modern lighting (LED spots).

I thought that in Spring I can get the walls insulated, and add a Resin screed to the Concrete floor.

So any tips especially re ventilation and heating.

Was thinking Infrared heating panel and ceiling fans, and air vents in stud wall at the up and over door end?

Oh the garage is single skin built as one of a pair, external brick wall with block dividing wall.

Brainless:  Garage Conversion:   Ventilation:  I had sky light windows installed in the roof of my building.  Heating: This is provided by infrared lamps (min 175 w) in each dog's bedding section/area with the addition of electric high valocity blow heaters often used in commercial garages.  Flooring: Resin flooring is expensive but for me was a must (applied on a sloping concrete base) making power washing so much quicker and easier.  Hope this helps.

Thanks. Sounds like the Resin flooring is a goid investment.

I was thinking of a 600w infrared panel heater on the wall that the dogbeds are.

As I am only contemplating use for up to 4 dogs and the occasional litter over 6 weeks I don't contemplate using a power washer, with it being also partly used as a Utility and storage (including food) area.

The dogs are free to come and go in the day with the glazed door open .  There is no other window, but as the main wall is South Facing, better that way. The door provides enough light.

The roof is flat, and I a getting EPDM roofing put on.

What about the walls. Was thinking Insulated plasterboard, but not sure if it should be directly applied to ealls ( dot and dab adhesive) or onto battens.

I suspect the latter to allow for the electric cables.

Brainless:  Garage Conversion:  Insulation:  I have used a product named 'Kingspan' which is a bit like polystyrene foam in sheets. I then covered it with dairyboard tacked to wooden batons.  It's warm in winter and cool in summer - might be an option? Re resin floors - it was more a hard wearing & cleanliness thing - just a suggestion.

Sorry meant to say the wooden batons were attached first & then the kingspan glued between each section.  I get round the power washing thing by storing food in large plastic barrels raised from the floor by wooden pallets.

Thanks, once Insulated it should keep a better ambient tempersture, especially in hot westher with the roof and ceiling insulated.

I used a standing fan this Summer, but celing mounted would be safer, when I have a youngster again..

It rarely goes below 10'C which is a comfortable temperature for my breed, and I prefer to keep it under 20 - 22'C for them in Summer.

Summer temperatures in the house are an issue, if all windows and doors are not kept open.

Tried Googling 'Dairyboards' without luck?

Brainless:  It's PVC Wall Cladding Sheets 8 x 4ft.  They are used in catering establishments if that helps on search engines.

you may want to look into acoustic foam as well. We recently converted our garage and it was really echoy, a bit foam on the wall sorted it out though.

Just had the Electrics updated,(and checked), 2 new double wall sockets ( there was only one), had the dual light switch remived as won't ever use the Garage doirs end one only the one by personal door.

Now have to measure and calculate battens, stud wall timber, insulation etc.

If you want insulation/soundproofing, you cannot beat Rockwool.  It is amazing. My neighbour is a carpenter and has built a huge shed to work in. The noise of the machinery, especially screeching electric saw, at the bottom of the garden was driving me bonkers last summer so I put in a gentle complaint. It was every day and weekend so not much fun gardening or sunbathing.
Anyway he told me he had on order this insulation for the walls and when it was delivered, I saw how thick it was. I think there are different thicknesses and prices.
After a few weeks of silence, i felt guilty I had stopped him working in his shed..and he told me he had been using the same machinery every day!  I cannot hear a thing.
I am going to tell my friend as she has moved house and is having an awful time with noisy neighbours & maybe she culd insulate the parti wall.

Apologies if this is contrary to what you want but thought worth telling you!

I am interested in this. I am a pianist and only have time to practise early in the morning. Our next move is dependent on my being able to play from 5ish onwards without disturbing neighbours
