Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Dog treats without white or sweet potato ingredients

Hi by using an elimination diet (mainly fish) I’ve found that my gsp is allergic to any kind of potato. She gets a yeast build up and inflammation in her ears. Wondering if anyone knows of potato free dog treats or recipes that i can give her? She is fed Eden mixed fish kibble. (No potatoes) with a topping of white fish or sardines. Thanks

It's probably best to google recipes for dog treats and make your own. Then you can be certain of the ingredients.

Mash up a tin of any fish in spring water eg tuna, sardine, mackerel. Add an egg then mix in flour type ingredient, I use rice flour, semolina or gluten free flour, until its the consistency to smooth out thinly on baking try without running all over the place. Then you can either microwave or oven bake. I always oven bake. Then use pizza cutter to cut into pieces. You can do the same with liquidized liver but messier and takes longer.

Thank you I think that is a good plan to make my own.

Thank you I will try that .. sounds a simple solution. My gsp does love any food so maybe my cooking will win her over!

Make you own. Something as simple as baked or boiled liver works well

Low fat cheese cut into cubes. Hot dog sausage slices will keep for a couple of days - the vacuum packed ones are better, and will freeze.

Thanks yes I think she’s ok with liver. Good idea!

I have yet to try her with cheese but pork sausages would be ok.. thanks .

Agree with others, homemade is a good idea, JR products are good though. We use the pate (that is 100% single source protein) cut up into to tiny pieces for training all the time. Bare in mind though that once open it can go off, so we do big batches at once in Tupperwares and the ones we won’t get through that week we put in the freezer, the ones we use in the week we just put in the fridge and take out when we need :)

I’ve now looked at JR products and have ordered the salmon pate and salmon sticks. She is ok on fish products but I think I’ll introduce some duck or rabbit and see if that protein affects her. Thank you for your help.

I’m sure she’ll love the pate, my dogs go mad for it - its their high value treat  I tend to slice it like a sausage, although the salmon one is a little less firm than others, and then cut it up really small...a little goes a long way trust me!

Hi yes she loves all food, problem is all food doesn’t love her. Especially the sandwiches and pasties left annoyingly by the visitor picnickers in our local park! Thanks once again.
