Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / best natural tooth cleaning chews? whippet
- By weimed [gb] Date 27.03.21 17:46 UTC
Please not raw chicken!
I would like to offer more things for our whippet to chew that have tooth cleaning properties- she gets cows hoofs, sometimes dried rabbit ears (I've gone off those as disappear in seconds now) she has dental sticks-and yes I know everyone hates them but she likes them.
I'm wary of antlers as do not want broken teeth.
which products do you find effective ?  or which part of a dried animal works best?

Raw frozen carrots, marrow and knuckle bones and also if they like them yak sticks.

Fallow deer antlers are soft so no risk of broken teeth

Never, used to have these for my lot as they are totally smell free BUT never again, when I have 3 dogs with broken teeth. The antlers I bought were from reputable source, not just any old place!

I use raw knuckle bones for the silkens my 12 year old still has pearly white teeth, the vet always comments on them. She also gets a frozen raw chicken wing every morning (sorry!) She did have one cracked tooth removed but I reckon that's quite good for her age. Next oldest at almost 10 has never needed anything done in his mouth and again the vet always comments on how great his teeth are.

I don't like marrow bones because they can get their narrow jaws stuck in them, that would be a danger for your whippet too, so beef knuckle bones only.

I bought 4 antlers years ago and they're still lying around the house untouched, but reading of your problems Lexy I think I'll bin them in case they suddenly decide to chew them.

My Whippet has dried fish pieces, or chew sticks (yes I know but she too loves 'em).  I have to be worried about broken teeth after on going in for a dental some while back now, they found a broken one.   I have no idea how that happened, nor that one was broken.    She (they) has/had rib bones when she can spend time outside with them.  Too messy for indoors.

Are Whippet teeth more liable to breaking, than other breeds?  Never had one break with my Bassets.

I have also had a dog get a slab fracture on a molar eating an antler and then needed long and expensive dental surgery to extract the molar. (Molars have deep roots...)

So - no antlers in this household unless it's a puppy with baby teeth who just can't chew hard enough to do any damage.

Raw knuckle bones. And there are some chews on JR Pet Products website which aren't bone but are pretty tough and natural. But really cleaning teeth at least once a week works best for me.... and getting the metal descaler out where necessary.

Hi
you could make your own natural powder, Kelp powder, Parsley powder, fennel powder, dill powder fragaria leaf powder, turmeric powder (if you want sweet smelling breath add chamomile powder (expensive) and peppermint powder) I have also seen activated charcoal added , but can not verify how this is accomplished. This added (1/6 teaspoon) to meals over 6 weeks removes plaque etc

has anyone tried ostrich bones or are they all hype?  very expensive but do they do all they claim? ie not splinter, long lasting?

I tried an ostrich bone with Isla and all went well initially. The ends had a honeycomb texture and crumbled nicely, but when she had chewed those off and got the to the shank she was able to split them into sharp pieces which although thin I felt they were too risky. I’ve not bothered since.

ostrich tendons are good. Last a determined chewer at least 10 min!
