Just had to tell everyone (I don't know why), but I'm quitting smoking!!! Today is the 25th day I haven't had a cigarette -- haven't gone that long in 10 years! I think our lab is very happy because he never did like the smell of dirty ashtrays!!

I'm using the patch, and I have to say that it's really great. Not a perfect solution, of course, but it really makes things a lot easier.

This is a good psychological tip...it worked for me anyway....when you start or begin to quit smoking...tell yourself that you are only going to quit for 1 week. Aim to then get through that week without 1. By doing this you haven't suddenly quit fullstop..you can just tell yourself you've stopped for 1 week. When that week finishes...and you've not smoked for a week...carry on for another week....Eventually week by week you'll build the mental confidence to begin letting go of the thought that you are a smoker...your an ex-smoker..not a non smoker...as sometimes happens with our dogs if you take something away they often want it more....little and often...

I haven't smoked for sooooooo many years now and gradually found that I'd built up so many weeks of being not smoking that I was suddenly a non smoker....

Give it a go everyoneeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!
Smoking kills and your dogs will breather easier too...
Hee hee...

Excellent tip Franc! Get the first day over, then aim for a week, and carry on like that. I still think of myself as being an ex-smoker - I got up to 30 a day before I quit - but I've been fag-free for 14 years now! I used tablets you used to be able to buy and take for a month - they were pricey, so being a miser I made sure I used them ;) and they worked!

One of the best things I ever did - I gave up when they reached £1.50 for twenty as I couldn't affordit any more...when I notice the price they are now I almost need one to get over the shock!!! :D

That's how I quit and have been nicotine free for 6 years now....I also couldn't justify paying nearly 5.00 pounds for a packet of 20...

Well done you , just think of all the money you'll save or rather spend on something really special.I want to get crufts out of the way then i'm going to try to stop.Especially as dog show entry fee's keep going up and i don't want to not be able to show my boys ,so it's a good incentive for me.

Good for u. I've been smoke free for almost 3 years I believe every now and then I get a craving but haven't touched it.

I heard u have to be careful while on the patch because if u are doing alot of exercise/hard work ect it passes alot into ur system. Some people went home sick at work because of it. Please be careful on it.

My husband quit on January 4 this year on his birthday. He chews the gum (the one with less). All he does is chew it and then puts it in his cheek and only chews it when he feels he wants a cigerate. So far so good 2 months and 3days. He just goes one day at a time. Pretty much the same that was posted go a week and just keep telling urself. It does work.

Congratulations for u and I'm sure u will do it.

ttfn :)

Well done! Keep going! You won't regret it - and work out how much money you haven't spent on them! :) (Then wonder what you spent it on instead! :()

You might want to try one of the "helpers" like patches or gum or the spray. But cutting down is good too! I've heard it makes quitting easier -- good luck!

Sounds great fish and chip patches for slimmers ;)
- By mr murphy [gb] Date 08.03.03 20:01 UTC
I stopped smoking almost 5 years ago. Dont know why I didnt do it sooner. I didnt use patches or anything I just stopped. It was easy. Iworked out how much I was spending and bought a brand new bike instead.

Im quitting when these puppies go. Im going to put the money I save in a jar, and it should pay for the two Im keeping to compete on the Munster Circuit this year. I quit for three years once, then the other half (Very, Very Ex now!) walked in and told me hed got the next door neighbour pregnant. I had the choice of a packet of Marlboro or the kitchen knife on the table. With hindsight I should have grabbed the knife...
- By bob [gb] Date 12.03.03 12:09 UTC
Hi Jane
Maybe we can quit at same time:D

Now I'm a sociable smoker. I can go weeks/months without a cigarette. The moment I walk into a pub, I HAVE to smoke. I've had this habit for well over a decade. I don't smoke toward the end of the evening, chainsmoke at the start. I'm quite shy and think this is definitely a cause. Any ideas how to kick this habit? I try so hard, but always HAVE to have a ciggie. Smells awful in the morning.

Try working on the respiratory ward of a hospital, when you've seen a few people die of COPD, and especially their families afterwards, it works wonders!:(

Jane

Sorry, that's perhaps a bit harsh, but if I could give up, anyone can.
- By Sammy [us] Date 12.03.03 14:02 UTC
Bring some nicotine gum with you when you go.

My mum is 75 year's old and need's an operation on her leg's she saw a consultant through BUPA privately, he said yes he would do the operation, and JUST TO GIVE HIME A RING WHEN SHE HAD GIVEN UP SMOKEING. she had smoked since 13 year's old, she is haveing the operation in ten day's time. She has now been stopped for 4 month's she used the patches supervised through the practice nurse at her doctor. If she can do if anyone can. My husband gave up after his first heart attack, became to confident and started again after 6 month, the scare wore off. He had another heart attack followed by a triple heart by pass. now he is disabled still with angina, just watch him for a week and it would strengthen your resolve.

Take each day as a new start. Every "gasper" you don't smoke is money saved and a step in the right direction!! Keep going!!:) :)

Sorry I've come into this so late, but I don't usually post on this site, as I'm more of a BARFer. Anyway, I gave up smoking two years and two months ago with the aid of Zyban (before all the horror stories in the press) and it was brilliant. Haven't had a fag in all that time, and had been smoking since I was 14 (now thirty ahem something!). Dogs and cats are over the moon! Don't believe the hype - I had no side effects whatsoever.

Well done! I quit at the beginning of last October by using the Nicorette Inhalator's, on prescription from my doctor, which was an excellent incentive as they are very expensive. I felt that if I bought the inalator's myself I might as well continue smoking as the cost was around the same (stupid or what!). Anyway, my hubby gave up at the same time using the lozenges, although he is now smoking again, but not in the house. I can't believe how bad it smells when he comes back in after smoking a ciggy outside! I'd been smoking for over 30 years, so it can be done, I am absolutely amazed at myself because I really never thought I'd be able to quite. I feel so much better for it, healthwise, psychologically, financially etc. When I go and do some temp work and I don't have to worry about when and where I can have a cigarette it's the most amazing feeling! Such a relief.

I am still using ONE inhalator per day, more as a prop than anything else, and I do intend weaning myself off that eventually, but as we are in the process of buying a house I think I'll wait!! (Please keep your fingers crossed for us on that one everyone!!).

Keep it up, believe me you'll be so glad! And you're not quitting, YOU'VE QUIT!
