Have any of you experience of repeat mating? I have the following questions
Is there any difference in the quality of the litter in the first and second litters?
Do you get roughly the same type of puppies both times?ie Head shape, fronts, feet etc.
Colour is not an issue as my breed only comes in one colour.
I would be interested in hearing your opinions.
Thanks
Diane

Hi Dianne,
Some years ago My Mattie had a lovely litter which produced a show champion plus two very lovely bitches which won well at ch shows and one bitch also got res ccs, a year later the mating was repeated in it was three dogs all nice dogs one went for a pet one I kept and the other went to become a show champion he now has 9 ccs and 9 res ccs anyway the second litters male has gone on to improve even more with age and is now six.
THe repeat mating was a great move for me and I would certainly do it again in the future if the first litter was impressive, some people said it may not work but in my case it did.
Every once in a while a bit of Magic happens
good luck :)

Hi,
When you repeat a mating, all you are doing is expanding the size of the first litter. It may be that all the "good ones" were the first ime and the "pets" the second. Of course, this would rarely happen in reverse, because who would repeat a mating that only produced "pets"?
You could also have the range of quality in both litters. First, second, fifth, it's all the same dice roll.

I do repeat matings if the quality/type of the puppies are what I want and have not found that the quality diminishes. My very first bitch went to the same dog three times and kept one from the first litter, 2 from the second and one from the third and they were all even quality and good winners. I dont see the point of using a different dog just for the sake of change, if its throwing want you want for your breeding programme. Also with my breed having smaller litters than some others, you get more of a chance to "bring out problems" to see what the line might throw,as if you intend to breed from the offspring and line breed back to your own its good to have more numbers in case any nasties rear their heads.
