When we had our small pack, we had entire males and females - we had NO unplanned litters, so it can be done. It had it's problems of course but we kept our bitches upstairs when in season and totally away from the rest, males and females. Of course the boys knew if one was in season but again, it's part and parcel of having entire males and females. We spayed our girls as soon as they were retired, to reduce the angst! Our males were only ever castrated for medical need.
Just to add I can tell you some bitches can be as keen to mate as the boys are to oblige so I'd never resort to diapers or belly bands etc. Too easy for them to be removed

As for castrating your male - yes, he could be viable for quite some time after the surgery. And castrated males can, and will mate and tie too. If you had problems with him when she was in season before, might it be a good idea, and kinder to him, to get him completely out of there while she's in season?
