Hello, I have just signed up as me and my partner are currently looking for a whippet puppy. We were looking at active sales listings, but noticed its pretty hectic. Some listings were up for only an hour before they were all reserved and we didn't want to commit to anything before speaking with the seller and seeing the puppies and parents.

I do have question that I couldn't see an answer to around the forum. I have created a waiting list entry for a whippet. Do I just leave it at that now and wait for a breeder to contact me, or should I still be messaging the breeders asking to go on their waiting list?

Many thanks
Aidan

Hi Aidan,

The waiting list part of this site means that you will get noticed by email when a new litter is listed. It is then down to you to contact the breeder. Good luck. It's a bit of a nightmare at the moment and you are likely to have to get yourself on a good breeders waiting list and then wait I'm afraid!

Try the Whippet Breed Clubs.  That way you 'should' avoid a BYB of which there are way too many breeding from pet bitches just now.  I've been looking for, maybe, an older Whippet boy but have noticed the prices being asked at the moment for just any Whippet.   Crazy.  I know how frustrating it is but it's NOT necessary to pay an arm and a leg for any puppy across all breeds just now.   Even if you have the money, why encourage this kind of breeding!

I do wish you well because I switched from my Bassets to a Whippet 12 years ago now (her breeder was living just outside Crediton, now relocated to a village on Dartmoor) and she's been so easy health-wise (fingers x'd).  Just corns on each of her front paws and a dental.  Once you get through the zoomies, they are a gentle, loving breed needing only a daily blast and then snuggles.   You do need a fully fenced area for them to let off steam (the zoomies).

Good breeders tend to have waiting lists, often former owners, and will be making their plans some months before the season they plan to mate.

If you think about it a bitch coming in season today would be having her litter mid April, with pups not going to homes until June.

Chanves are the majority of pups will be spoken for before mating and birth.

So it is not unreasonable to go on a breeders waiting list 9 - 12 months before you'd expect to bring a puppy home.

Contact breeders from breed club lists.

Let them know what kind of home you can offer a puppy.

Thank you everyone for your helpful messages. We actually found a private seller nearby, all legit and kc registered. Brought our boy home today and he has settled amazingly.
Thank you again everyone for your help.
