Hi, my 12 year old has, in the last few weeks, started scooting his bottom on the grass when I let him in the garden for a poop before bed.
He doesn't do this at any other time, either indoors or out.  His stools are normal, he is eating & drinking fine and there have been no changes to any other behaviour or health.
We haven't had that horrible fishy smell from his bottom that might indicate some anal gland issue.
So, is this something that he has just decided that he likes to do?  We have artificial grass which, I presume, gives his nether region a good scratch.
I'm reluctant to go to the vet in the current circumstances if it's just a fad and he's doing it for pleasure!

I would be taking him for a vet check. Not fair to leave him if he’s showing possible discomfort.

I doubt your dog needs Vet attention.  When was the last time he was wormed?  The larvae can cause anal irritation and 'scooting' is normally one of the signs that alerts an owner to worms.
I would try a worming treatment first and then see how things turn out.

He's not due worming for a few weeks yet but have given it to him and will see if that helps in the next day or two, if not will call the vet.

: All dogs have worms & not because they have 'dirty' habits, just because they eat things from the ground, drink filthy water and enjoy raw meat (maybe found as road kill)

I have only once or twice smelled anal glands that needed emptying.  Usually it's the scooting that gives it away or for one of mine, it's when he starts doing multiple non-existent poos on his walks (goes through the motions but no 'results').
