I have a standard red poodle that is a year and a half old. Since she was a pup I had planned to breed her, but do not know how to find a stud for her. Before she is old enough to be bred I would like to find her a stud. How can I find a purebred standard red poodle for her?
If you can give me any information on the subject matter i would appreciate it.
Thank you

i'm not one for giving breeding advice( i don't breed), but as i'm probably the only on the board right now I would suggest you start with her breeder, they are the best one's at giving advice for a stud dog as they will know her lines better than anyone.
Before considering breeding please make sure you have had all relevant health tests carried out, and that she is a good specimen of the breed.

Hi Guest,
Alison is quite right with her advice. Assuming that you poodle is KC registered, the best thing to do is to contact her breeder and ask his/her advice. If they are reputable they will let you know whether she is of suitable breeding standard, or has a too many faults (and all dogs have faults, even the top winners!) to make her a good breeding prospect - if she was sold purely as a pet she may not be. This does not mean she is not a nice dog - just not a potential broodbitch!

If she has sufficient merit the breeder will know which lines are likely to suit hers - some lines (families) while very good in themselves just do not mix well with certain others, and disasters can result.

You will also have to make sure she has passed the relevent health checks for her breed - Standard Poodles should be hip-scored (the average is 15), eye-tested and tested for Sebaceous Adenetis.

Hope this helps :)

Sam we don't know what country Guest lives in, maybe elsewhere the colours (or colors :)) may be referred to differently, might be apricot for instance.

In some breeds that can be red (eg collies and staffies) I know breeders do not generally breed two reds together as the result can be a weak red, bringing in different colours (eg black) enriches the colour. However, I have no idea if this applies to different colours or poodles as they are not a true red, do you have an apricot or a liver coloured poodle?
