We have a Black Labrador dog who is 18months old we have been thinking of getting another dog however, we have been thinking about a chocolate lab but have had numerous people tell us that they do not have the best of temperaments compared to the yellow or black variety. Can anyone give us advice on the subject.

a labrador is a labrador, no matter what colour it is.
What Cazmar means is that if they were bred carefully, with temperament in mind, then it should not matter which colour the dog is. However, not everyone is as careful as they should be when they breed their dogs. So the usual advice applies, which is to take the utmost care in seeking out a suitable breeder. If the colour is right, but the breeding isn't, then pass up on that litter and continue your search. You will find the right puppy if you put in the effort!
Good luck in whatever you choose to do.

I wouldnt say that there was any significant difference in temperament of Chocolates BUT!! bad tempers are cropping up in the breed more and more these days I feel the blame is on puppy farmers mass producing for the pet market without any thought to health or temperament issues.
we do not get as many chocs in rescue as say blacks or yellows so its hard to compare.
The advice is good to contact a labrador Club first and get a list of breeders who are members of the club who may have puppies planned. In order to be a mamber of a Labrador club memebers must accept the code of ethics of the club ie: use the health schemes etc.I have a full list of phone numbers for all the clubs if you wish to email me I will give them to you or you can do a search on labrador retriever Clubs and you may find them on here.
