Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Kong feeder toys
- By ballgame [gb] Date 14.12.20 10:49 UTC
Hi All

I hope you’re all well. I wanted to hear your collective thoughts on the Kong chewy feeder toys?

Would you recommend them?

Would you recommend two?

What are your thoughts on feeding pups / adult dogs with palm oil / salt free peanut butter and bananas?

We’ve a plethora of toys at the ready for an impeding puppy arrival but I’ve yet to decide on a Kong

Many thanks as always.

Any kongs u use must have a hole in both ends.its usually just a small hole to prevent a vacuum and potentially an acident  with the dogs tongue getting stuck .
Any toys etc should be supervised.
As for palm oil I try and avoid it for us anyway and use meridian peanut butter which is pretty much all peanuts  . Squeezy cheese is good too all in small amounts.
Some dogs like bananas and don't usually do amy harm
unless the dog is allergic to them .just watch amounts as u don't want treats to increase weight

Our pup enjoys his kong. We tend to use soft cheese in it but have used peanut butter too. We have put it in the freezer so he can chew and help ease his gums. He likes banana but we’ve not given him it too much. There’s an instagram page @nofussfill who have sone good ideas.
The other thing he enjoys is his lickimat. We have a couple and instead of using his bowl at every meal we use a mat. It definitely slows him down and he seems to enjoy it if there’s different textures on it.

Licky  mat are great. I bought silicone waffle moulds from amazon which are much cheaper and use those. Or if u are feeling creative u can make a snuffle mat and hide kibble in it.

I've looked at snuffle mats but our pup is obsessed with labels, they're the only thing he destroys (at the moment). I'm not sure a snuffle mat would survive!

> Some dogs like bananas

River loves a bit of banana! I also have three rabbits who adore it. It’s been years since I’ve enjoyed a whole banana to myself, with four pairs of eyes boring into me, waiting for to see if I’ve saved them all a piece...

The cat sits there wondering what all the fuss it about.

As for Kong fillings, I know a lot of people just use soaked mushed up kibble, and I’ve mixed kibble with things like cream cheese, natural yogurt, peanut butter, etc, just enough that it doesn’t fall out by itself.

Palm Oil.
Know it's know in many products, but it's not something I'd ever feed to a dog due to its toxicity.
In it's raw state often washed up after winter storms on our surrounding beaches with a number of local dogs having died after eating it, our own boy had to be rushed to the vet a couple of weeks ago having found some. Very palatable to dogs but takes the enjoyment out of beach walk.

palm oil / salt free peanut butter
Re-reading the OP I wonder if she means 'palm oil free, salt free' ?

Tatty-ead, Think you're right (I hope so), my reading is often as bad as my writing!

Correct in that I meant devoid of palm oil and salt free so essentially just pure peanut butter. Is it frowned upon to feed a dog peanut butter or is it a healthy snack in small doses? Many thanks for the replies so far, I’ve just ordered a Kong :)

I have used Kongs for years and filled them with chunks of carrot/cucumber/apple/green beans etc. I know some people fill them with stuff that will freeze but, if you do this, remember to insert a straw right the way through the Kong before freezing. This makes an air hole through the middle and stops tongues getting trapped inside the Kong if/when suction builds up. Either way, it is probably best not to leave a dog totally unattended with a Kong.

Great tip re: straw.
