I recently watched a programme about puppies, and one of these was included.    Does anybody know where in the UK I could find one, or would it mean importing from Germany?

Funny enough I watched the same program and thought about you. They do look to be a nice looking dog. Unfortunately know nothing about them

Best place would prob be the breed club, there don't have the word scent in the name here.

Since posting, I found the breed club in the UK and have emailed a rescue rep in the SW.   We'll see!

They are much higher energy than a basset hound, be warned. More akin to a gundog... but with the nose of a hound. Unless you're up for a lot of training and long hikes, probably best skipped.

I knew a breeder of the larger related Hanovarian scent hound.lovely natured, and the Bavarians I met also lovely.

Yep, I'm aware and this is only in the investigation stage - bearing in mind IF I go further with this, it wouldn't be a puppy

They are very high drive and not easy dogs by any means. Some have a bit of an attitude too. Some people in the breed will only home to working homes, and they don’t condone breeding from dogs without the working assessments they do here. There are unfortunately some pet people breeding without even basic health testing.

The people in the breed are very passionate about them though and I’m sure they’ll be helpful with your enquiry! I’ve trained with them on their blood tracking days. Very cool working dogs, lovely looking, but not for the feint of heart! They seem pretty chilled in the house, just real hunters out and about.

I’ve just noticed on a certain site that someone is selling a litter of Bavarian mountain hounds crossed with a cocker spaniel! Oh and it’s also marketed as being the latest rare breed That’s going to be one confused dog

And confused.com owners..... if the BMH is go-go, bred with some Cockers - ye gods.   Why can't people LEAVE PUREBRED BREEDS ALONE.   I shudder to think what price is being asked for these.....

One thing I do find odd about how these look is those with a black head, and a mahogany body.   Looks like they've been photo-shopped!!   Black Lab head on something like a Ridgeback body

That colouration in Rabbits is called Sooty fawn or in the English breed Tortoiseshell.

In the Bavarians the Dark head colouring should gradually lighten from the head to neck to the Mahogany/red body.

I've actually met several at game fairs too, I first met them several years ago in the rare breeds parade at the HoundShow, the owners are always delighted that I know what they are Nice looking dogs, lovely rich colour, and still able to do a days work. The ones I've met have all been bred to work and owned by sporting people instead of show.

Used to be some on a shoot I was on a few years ago. I'm not sure they were very well-trained but they did a good job of running about everywhere and putting birds up!

I saw a fabulous one in agility a few years ago, competed at the top level.

This idea may end up being a non-starter.   I've not heard back, yet, from the SW Breed Rep.   Maybe because he/she is busy this weekend, or there are none in rescue atm.

There is currently a litter near me, BMH mum and a cocker dad, £1500! I assume it's an oops litter, you'd think they would be able to sell a full Bavarian MH litter for more if money is a motivator!

No. A good friend told me they are very anti breeding unless you can prove working abilities and are struggling as a result. They are being encouraged to show as a way to support growth in the breed. Good luck.

I saw that mix being advertised.   Sigh.   Even if was an oops, why allow the pregnancy to continue when it's not necessary.....

I have heard from BMH rescue - they sent me an application form but tbh, I've pretty much ruled out this being an option for me at my time of life, even with an oldie.

It's in my local paper in Central Scotland, I thought how would you see it, then googled and sure enough it seems an almost regular mix all over the place :::sigh

Many would say find a reputable Breeder rather than a Puppy. Having done all your homework and up to date with required health testing you will be able to
single out the undesireable breeders and then request addition to waiting lists of the good breeders.  It may take a year or more but it really is the best way
to proceed with your search.  Re rescue centres - you may be lucky and find this breed but an adult dog is unlikely to have proven history ie pedigree/blood lines/ health tests etc which is less than desirable.  Good Luck

Hoggie mamabas is a long time member and very experienced breeder .have a look at her previous posts and through this thread  and u will see she   is well aware of the pitfalls of looking for puppies and rescue especially now .

furriefriends: I only looked through the thread.  MamaBas posted that a programme she had watched highlighted this breed and asked if there was somewhere a puppy could be found in the UK?  Then commented that she was looking at rescue centres.  As with anyone who posts these questins on the site, I answered with the normal response from the Forum.

You should be answering with your response not what you think others would say.

I believe mamabas was ultimately asking if anyone had any contacts of a reputable breeder in U.K.

And I wouldn’t expect pedigree health tested dogs to be found in rescue centres as a general rule. Looking for a rescue dog is completely different to looking for a well bred puppy.
