I have a 5 month old cocker spaniel and she has developed smelly breath that doesn't seem like the usual dog breath.  It seemed to happen overnight and is fairly strong.  We brush her teeth and have the teeth cleaning treat toys but any suggestions? Could it be because she is losing teeth?

When pups change their teeth (starting at about 4 months, with all the baby teeth out by 6 months usually) their breath does change and smell a bit metallic, from the blood.

This happened to a dog of mine once. Like Jeangenie says I assumed it was due to teething at the time, but it persisted. She's now almost 7yo and her breath is fine.

Things changed when I put her on a raw diet and stopped the kibble.

Could it be cleaning anal glands ( smell is rather fishy).

Alternatively could she be cleaning a bit of vaginitis, quite common in prepubescent bitches.

In some dogs such as cockers you can get lip fold dermatitis too which is not a nice smell! Seen (smelt) it on a few spaniel crosses in work. It’s when the little folds in the lip on the lower jaw get bacteria in and it just gets a bit grim. Just another consideration with the above good ideas too

Matted Coat:  Received a call from Hafren Rescue Centre  2 days ago to request a re homing/placement for a Show Type Spaniel found roaming Aberystwyth Beach Area and agreed to take her under my wing...  She arrived earlier today needing a good feed. a little bit of initial understanding and comfortable housing.  I have no experience of a 'show type' coat's grooming requirements but she has matting on her tummy. tail & rear legs which smells to 'high heaven'. Should I put her through the trauma of clippers first. bathing first or let her settle for a period of time before any action is taken?  Didn't see this situation coming but would appreciate the Forum's advice....

Probably best to start a new thread for this question so it doesn't get missed

Furriefriends. Gave it a wee try but think there might be a step missing? Hit 'board Index' - only lists - new posts, reply to post, notify or upvote. Never mind, the little spaniel is sitting under my chair, had a belly full of food and a big fuss.  She seems to understand the blanket on the floor thing as 'bed' so hopefully she'll have a settled night.
