I'm posting for a mate yet again. She has a bitch who by her reconing is 7 weeks along. She seems to have raised teats and her boobs look a little flabbier than normal. She has a complete personality change, clingy, protective, more assertive, agressive towards other dogs, more confident, sleeps all the time.
She hasn't put on an ounce in weight and the pups are not obvious. The vet has examined her and can't say for sure, she didn't have her scanned.
Is it possible for this dog to be pregnant even though she isn't showing??
I've told her to get her scanned incase there is only one or two.
What do u think

a scan would be a good idea to confirm whether or not there are any pups. perhaps she is having a phantom

Ive got a bitch who never shows any signs of being in whelp until 8hrs (almost to the dot) before she has them, then she fills up with milk and starts nesting. I always look at their bellies about three weeks after mating. On a short hair breed there is usually a faint "blush" and the teats are pinker. The vulva is a good sign too. If the bitch is in whelp, it doesnt go back to its pre-season size, but will become quite huge and saggy a few days before whelping.
She has just under 2 weeks to go.She's had no discharge and her vulva doed look a little larger to me but then she's not my dog and I can't be certain. Her belly doesn't seem any larger yet her ribcage looks as if it's spread wider.I think possibly that they just haven't moved down. The reason she hasn't had her scanned is the vet she uses has a part time surgery near where she lives and he doesn't do the scans there, she would have to take her to the main surgery which is 30 miles away and the bitch is terribly car sick.So for obvious reasons she doesn't want her upset.

Personally, Im not a huge fan of scanning or x-rays either. No doubt they have their uses, but luckily Ive never had to bother. Just treat her as if she is in whelp and whip her to vet for check up if she passes her due date by more than 24 hours. With the ribs spreading it sounds as if she may well be though. Have a min dachs bitch here in whelp, and bless her, her belly is on the floor and her ribs are blown to the point she snores for England. Thank goodness she only has a couple of days left! In a breed that doesnt have big litters at all, I think she will be the exception to the rule. Poor little cockle, her tail hasnt stopped wagging non-stop though!
Wish your friend best of luck, and hope she is pleasantly surprised (whatever outcome she is hoping for...)

When are yours due then, as my girl is due on Sunday, but had her first litter 4 days early so really could be any time now. I know what you mean about the ribs!!!!

Mines due on Sunday too, She started panting and ripping the paper just over an hour ago, so it looks as though I'll be up tonight, ready to look like a zombie when I go to work tomorrow. Luckily the people are really nice that I work with so I'll just turn up as and when.
Ooh, the joys of being a soon to be grandma.
Righty o!!!Said friend has just rung me again.Bitch is 61 days on Sat ,still no abdomen enlargement, sleeps constantly and is eating small meals and is continuously starving.Drinking all the time.Anyway we thought it was a full blown phantom but she says she gently squeezed one of her teats and got a clear liquid....no milk.
I've never heard of this
Any ideas anyone ???

Jenny is 61 days today ( to first mating) and has just started panting and looking for a place to nest. Cavaliers usually whelp between 60 and 62 (or least mine do). If they go much over that it generally means trouble. We are so looking forward to Jenny's babies, this was her fourth attempt at getting pregnant and so we are doubly happy.

Well she's not 61 days until Sat and is showing no signs of digging although she has thrown her blanket out of her bed.
It's this clear liquid coming from the teat that I want to know about if anyone knows.Could she be pregnant after all???

Milk is produced in phantom pregnancies as well as genuine ones :(

Could it be the collostrum?
Carissa
I always thought collostrum was milky in appearance??Do you think it could be that.???
I've been over this morning to have a look at her.Behaviour wise she's pregnant.Even sits down at an awkward angle with her legs splayed appart as they do,and she walks with a waddle. But no belly and no swollen vulva, still got this clear liquid though but only from the bottom 2 sets of teats
Phantom????

I fortunatley (knock on wood) have never had a phantom. I think there is a chance of it being collostrum though. Wish I could give you a yes or no, sorry.

Kia, if it is only coming from the back teats it is colostrum. Depending on what the bitch is fed, it ranges from yellowish clear, to milky yellow :) Looks like pups, good luck to you and your friend.
Looks like I've been well and truly roped in here.
As it's her first litter(bitch and owner) and the dog does know me we are taking it in turns to spend the night with her,so as soon as she starts to show signs (if ever) then I'm packing my welping box and sleeping bag.
I do hope she is as she's a lovely bitch ,if you'd heard her this morning poor thing every time she mooves she groans,it's pityful to see.Hope there's something at the end of it for her sake.I'm still a bit dubious though still no belly but then it's only 60 days today.According to "The Book of the Bitch", sperms can still fertilize 3-7 days after mating.Oh!!! gawd I hope not.I dont think my nerves could stand it .The suspense is killing me.This is worse than waiting for a bitch to start that you know is pregnant!!!!

It must be nerve wracking. I don't envy you the waiting. I have cats that I have to wait like that. Himalayans can be such a pain to breed.
It's like you have to put everything on hold until you have the litter or know for sure there isn't one. Especially if it is only one pup. Poor you!
Keep us posted.
Carissa
nothing yet.No signs at all.Sleeping like a log at the mo,she's just been dropped off at Mine as my freind has to go and get some supplies in .In fact earlier on she was bouncing around playing with my 2 ....doesn't even look pregnant!!!!

What a mystery, certainly keeps ya guessing doesn't it? She'll probably pop out a couple of pups when no ones looking!
