Topic Dog Boards / Health / Does anyone feed their dog a white fish diet?
- By saga Date 10.11.20 19:03 UTC
Hi. Just been to vets with Coco’s ear and skin problems. She has suggested starting a white fish diet. This would involve feeding Canagan salmon dry kibble and supplement with white fish. This will be for 6 weeks. Would be interested to hear about anyone having to do this to help their dog?

Canagan is a complete food .I dont understand why the addition of white fish ?  Its adding things to an already balanced food therefore making it unbalanced .
If she is thinking food allergies the canagan has a number of ingredients any of which could be an allergen .

Did.the  vet explain their reasoning?.

Hi. My vet asked what I was feeding her on. I said Canagan chicken kibble and Forthglade just wet food. She wanted to keep me on the same line of food but to refer to the ingredients on the pack. Salmon and veg is a good food with few or no allergens. I know it’s a complete food but a bit of White fish makes the meal a much more interesting feed! My dog seems to be allergic to anything with beef (diarrhoea!) thanks for your reply x

Give it a try , tracking food allergens can be very tricky.
Been there twice now discovering both food and environmental allergens .
Hope it helps

I stuck with my general.vet for a while.who is very good but then asked for.a.referral to a specialist dermatologist.
That was when we really got to.grips.with our problems.amd wjat the main allergens were .its not easy to pin them down at all but   Its been worth every penny .
We still see her every few.months for.checks and as our main problem.now is ears we do have to.tweak what we do .generally brooke is loads better . Been under the specialist for probably 5 years plus now .

Please try Eden fish cuisine and salmon oil supplement, it made a massive difference to my Father’s Yorkie who has suffered with chronic itchy and flaky skin having been on hills prescription diet. All about dog food.com for nutritional values etc, good luck.

For clarity the salmon oil is totally separate and not purchased from Eden.

I’ too will stick with my vet for a while ..she seemed to know what she was talking about. If it stops her never ending ear shaking and the discomfort that she’s feeling ill be more than thankful. She also put anti bacterial anti fungal drops in both her ears that will supposedly last 4 weeks! Tonight I’m pleased to report that my girl is much more restful!
I have to report back to the vets in 4 weeks. Thanks once again for your input. X

Not sure whether you are interested in raw but Wolf Tucker do a naked white fish which will arrive frozen for you to defrost and serve.  My boy absolutely loves it.

Salmon based food tends to be my go-to for a semi elimination diet, when I've got a fair idea of what the triggers might be.  I haven't yet had a dog be allergic to it and I've had several dogs with food allergies.

The problem with using any kibble for this purpose is that there are multiple ingredients, so unless you've already got some idea of what's going on, it's fumbling in the dark.  In those two varieties of canagan you've got potato, sweet potato and peas so if any of those is a trigger, changing foods won't make any difference, however long it's fed for.  But if the chicken is the issue (and it is a common trigger) then it'll work beautifully!  That's the problem.

Either a raw, single novel protein diet or home cooked single novel protein and single novel carb diet tend to be the best ways to do an elimination diet.  You know exactly what's going in, and because the dog has never had them, he's unlikely to react to them.  So you feed until the reactions have eased (6-8 weeks is the typical time frame for this stage), then start adding things back in one at a time to look for reactions.

Agree with all nikita has said having had to.do.this for.2.dogs .
As far as food is concerned mine are both allergic to salmon including salmon oil and chicken in all its.forms
Fortunately I feed raw so that's not hard to avoid . I do have to be careful with treats though  .
U also have to be aware that allergies can be environmental which need an experienced vet  to help u identify .
Unfortunately mine have environmental allergens as well.ones u can't remove.

My whippet is on Arden Grange sensitive white fish and potato. She went on it as a puppy as had upset belly due to giardia and as it suited her well stayed on it and is now on the adult version.  It has very few ingrediants so may be one worth looking at
