Topic Dog Boards / Health / Non healing eye ulcer

My dog has a non healing eye ulcer. We've done the antibiotics, and Corneal Remend, which didn't help. She has now had a grid op, and we have autologous serum. I am putting the serum in four times a day, my question is it does appear to be causing irritation when applied, and making her rub at her eye, (she is wearing a comfy collar). This really is the only time her eye seems to bother her. I am obviously going to speak to my vet tomorrow, but just wondered if anyone else has used this serum, and experienced the same problem.

I've never needed to use it and did some giggling. The expecting is aa its made from the dogs own blood plasma and saline it doesn't sting or cause discomfort. Could it just be it tickles or similar causing discomfort?

I haven't used the two treatments that you mention but my 12 year old Beagle started with his indolent ulcer in April, shortly after having an operation to remove a nodule from the inside of his lower eyelid. Because of Covid regulations, he was treated by trying a various drops and gels, with the vet monitoring by our sending stained-up photographs each week. Some of the drops and gels did definitely make him worse. Eventually we were down to using either Viscotears or hyaluronate drops six times a day, which kept him comfortable but made no progress. (I actually found the Blink human ones were the best for this).
By July, Covid rules had relaxed enough for his vet to decide on debriding the ulcer with a diamond burr and attaching an Acell disc. The eye was stitched closed for healing to take place. We had watch that he didn't rub it for a couple weeks, but the op has been very successful. There is a tiny dimple where the ulcer used to be, but I am told that they do level up given time. He still has slight conjunctivitis in that eye, but he is hypothyroid, and also takes a drug which is intended to keep his bowel tumours in check. This has k. sicca as a side effect - it is a balancing act.

Thank you Furriefriends. I also googled it, and couldn't find anything regarding discomfort/irritation, and agree with you that it is the dogs own plasma, (and is supposed to be a natural anti inflammatory), so shouldn't be causing a problem. I've actually just put some in now, and she seems happier, perhaps her eye is not so sore now! Here's hoping it's beginning to heal.

Thank you for your reply, your poor Beagle. I hope he stays well. I've just put the second lot of today's serum in Cookie's eye, thankfully no reaction. I am just now hoping that it is beginning to heal.

The last of my Bassets suffered with ulcers in both eyes (strange that) but thankfully responded to drops (I'd have to look up what).  Unfortunately the last of our bloodline wasn't so lucky and despite the grid debriding treatment, it wouldn't heal until my then vet (who specialises in eye conditions) stitched the third eyelid across to make a 'bandage'.  He managed to paw the stitches out overnight after some days but thankfully had achieved a 90% heal.   Maybe your vet could try this?

We had a Cocker who damaged his eye while  "bramble bashing" which ended with an ulcer .
After trying an assortment of remedies our vet suggested using the dogs own serum. (which my vet extracted twice each week to keep it fresh). I don't remember there being any irritation.
This worked and there were never any further problems.
He remained with a small scar which was never a problem, it was always noted when he went for his regular BVA eye checks, but this affected nothing.
