Apologies if it sounds a naïve question. When buying a puppy what are the main points should I look for in a contract?

Hi Champ.  There is a comprehensive Puppy Pack available to down load from the Kenner Club site under @Assured Breeders Page@  It covers everything from Administrative paper work to feeding & worming record pages as well as the other end of the rickter scale of Endorsements.  It has to be signed by both Breeder & Owner and gives no room for misinterperation.

Thank you Hoggie. I'll download that.

Puppy Buyer Guide
- By Vadeko [gb] Date 29.10.20 06:50 UTC Edited 29.10.20 06:55 UTC
Hi,
I am buying a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy in the spring from a breeder. The only contract I could find was the version provided on the RSPCA website which is not very comprehensive.
Where can I download the Kennel Club’s contract? I have checked their website and typed in the search bar for the contract , but nothing came up other than the page titled ‘ What should the breeder give me?’ which doesn’t provide anything official to download.

Also can someone let me know whether the prices will increase next spring for this breed?

Thank you.

It's to be hoped that on the contrary - prices will go back to more sensible levels soon.  However I've  noted that there are an increasing number of 'lockdown' puppies appearing on P4Hs website now in all the breeds I've been looking at- at almost the same prices as a 'new' puppy however.    Be careful where you put your money!!   Reputable buyers should be more interested in the home, than the financial reward.n

Thank you @MamasBas
Pricing is something that is a bit of a grey area.
After some careful thought, I decided to no longer search websites such as Pets4homes etc for a puppy because the breeders I contacted via that website were not very transparent i.e answering questions pertaining to vaccines and history of where the mummy  and daddy of the puppies was.
After watching the Dogs Trust documentary it made me decide to not rush and to just take more time to prepare via researching  and readImg content from reputable sources. The Dogs Trust documentary helped me to see why the puppy farms are growing (At a rapid rate) and the difficulties the authorities have in preventing them shipping thousands of dogs into the UK (and listing them via those websites). Some of the puppy farms on the documentary had even rented dummy houses and produced fake Kennel Club documents etc.
On a brighter note, asides from the Kennel Club, this  website Champs has been invaluable for me. I have literally put together an A3 folder (for Kofi) that has all of the relevant useful info from this forum and the puppy guidance pages.  It is just a huge relief to of finally found a breeder that has Ethics/principles and not driven by profit.

I posted the contract question because I really want to have my ducks in a row to be a responsible dog mummy.
The breeder is lovely, so I might ask the breeder and email the Kennel Club.

Thank you.

You will find that the majority of breeders over years of experience have developed their own puppy contracts.

The 'one size fits all' specimin contracts devised by the Kennel.Club and other organisations are a more recent development.

The former when the Kennel Club set up it's Accredited /Assured breeder scheme, as they required members to use contracts, as many breeders previously simply relied on mutual Trust.

When I bought my foundation bitch in 1992 from a highly respected breeder, I received a Kennel Club Registration certificate, a hand written pedigree, A5 Diet sheet, and a Vaccination card (she was nearly 12 weeks old).

What was more valuable was her support friendship and mentoring until her death in 2001.

The KC "Puppy pack template" which is meant for assured breeders to use as a guide and personalise, can be found here:

Brainless:  Puppy Contract:  Yes things have moved on and I agree the most important thing is the life long support we offer.  It is actually included in the ABS Official Puppy Contract that this is the responsibility you take on board as a Breeder and the benefits you receive with updates, regular emails & friendships developed are invaluable.

Noted. Thanks @Brainless

Wow, that is incredible that a breeder would be so kind and supportive for 10 years! It just goes to show the difference between working for passion vs profit.

Have a nice weekend

Noted. Thanks @Goldmali

I have saved that template and will discuss it with my breeder.
I suppose contracts are useful for transparency.

The sire of my bitch continued to mentor me until her death in 2008, and there are others in my breed who have continued to be a wealth of knowledge and support for the last 28 years.

I hope those who have come after me have benefited in their turn from me.

I have helped with rehoming any of my former pups whose owners circumstances changed, even at 9 years old, as a responsible breeder should be there for the lifetime of their puppies.

In fact recently the stud dog owner of a litter took on one of my pups (now.elderly) due to marriage break up where owner could not find rented accomodation with a dog after having to sell house.

Otherwise she would have come to me, sadly she only lived less than a.year.

Any good breeder will have their own contract, you don't need to be taking one to a breeder, if they don't do one I wouldn't be purchasing a puppy from them.
I would ask your breeder now if they have a copy so you can have a read through. The signing of contracts will happen when you collect the puppy.

Hi just a quick update. I no longer need to draft a contract. I spoke to the breeder and she already has a detailed contract.

Also I think some people shouldn't be classed as breeders especially if they are doing this as a hobby e.g my breeder has a plethora of knowledge and seems more like a 'fairy dog mother'.

Thank you all for the advice. I am new to this website and have learnt so much already.

Super excited to become a dog mummy next year!

Stay safe. : )

This for us is absolutely key.

My wife and I are very much at the start of our journey and whilst being in lockdown has made us really want to bring a new furry friend into the home, we're not prepared to dive straight in. We've set ourselves a timeframe (which is a minimum of three years) - during this time we're going to research those breeds that are of interest and then reach out to those Breeders and build a relationship that will be beneficial for all - cost isn't even a factor; we won't be going anywhere near P4H and various other sites that are out there.

Good luck in your search @Vadeko - your current breeder sounds like they might be the ones for you :)
