Topic Dog Boards / Health / My dog is allergic to Fish
- By lkj [gb] Date 27.10.20 10:57 UTC
For years we have been trying to cope with my dogs allergies.  She is allergic to all types of fish.  For example dog food that contains fish and fish oil etc.  Does anyone know what dry kibble we could use?  We have been searching everywhere.  Even on American and Australian sites.  People there are desperate as well.

All fish - are you sure?   Having used an Autarky fish complete diet for some years, after Frankie, I now have my Whippet on Harringtons - first of all their Salmon and Sweet Potato, and now another of their grain-free menus - Chicken and Sweet Potato both of which are fine although she seems to prefer the chicken (grain-free).    The kibble is small which suits her, and I'm reaping the benefit of lower costs!!   Vet bills too although she had her time in the spotlight with a warty thing taken off, and a dental (a broken tooth was found .....).  As said before, that was an unexpected 'ouch' but the growth had to come off as it started bleeding.

I would recommend Trovet hypoallergenic diets which are available from  petfoodwarehouse.co.uk
You can internet search to get precise info about the ingredients of each variety

I just checked the ingredients in Burns pork and potato - no mention of any fish BUT when you look at analysis - it includes Omega 3 - which is fish oil as does many other foods.
LKJ said fish and fish oil are problems

Thank you all for your replies.  We will try Trovet vegetarian.  As our dog has a thyroid problem she must not eat kelp.  Though seaweed and not fish it still originates from the sea.

It's a problem as fish oil is added to most commercial food, dry or wet for the Omega 3s.

You may end up having to make home made finding a substitute for the essential oils.

Could you feed raw? Then you know your dog is not getting anything with fish or fish oil in it.

My dog is allergic to anything with sweet potato in it and it can be a nightmare to find suitable food as it’s in most things now.

Have a look at Skinners duck and rice.  No mention of fish oil or omega 3, and it has linseed in which is a good source of plant-derived omega 3.

welshdoglover - it and the salmon and rice variety also don't have sweet potato in!
