Topic Dog Boards / Health / strange cramps in hind leg on staffie cross
- By gingazzhasteeth [gb] Date 30.09.20 15:06 UTC
I have a Lab/Staffie cross and twice now, about 6-7 weeks apart he's suddenly pulled up when walking and raised one of his back legs up (a bit like when they stand on a thorn). Today he hopped along for a few yards then started walking normally.
The first time he hopped the last half a mile or so home then hopped round the house for an hour. By time my missus had come in from work shortly after he was fine.
Then this again today ...had a feel around his back leg/paw and spine, but nothing, certainly no sounds of pain. (and he's a bit of a crybaby and very vocal)
Can dogs just get regular cramps like people?
As usual a google search always seems to end up with nothing but hysterical American websites designed to freak people into going to a vet for everything

I am not a vet, but hopping/skipping can be patella luxation, especially if the lameness is sudden and “fixes” itself suddenly too.

My papillon has low grade PL and when a kneecap moves out of place he squeals, it’s obviously uncomfortable. It usually goes back in almost immediately by itself (I’ve helped a couple of times) and he’s absolutely back to normal after a minute’s rest, with no sign of lameness or pain once it’s in place again.

I’d get your vet to have a look, whatever it is you’re best off knowing about it I think. Not trying to scare you or anything, but we can’t diagnose anything on an Internet forum.

I totally agree with silver leaf i think a vet visit is needed and un the meantime try and restric her jumping and lenght of walks
Hopefully it is just a simple strain and may require rest and some antiflamatories but we can't diagnose here

Patella luxation, possibly but have you considered this might be a Charlie Horse'[?

We can only guess however, so if something is going on, the best option really is to have your vet take a look/x-ray if needed.

thanks for the reply, if not cramps the Patella luxation angle was what I was thinking. Will try vets if it happens again.
I prefer going in a with a bit of an idea before expensive ct scans and x-rays start being ordered.
I've been badly burnt by vets just chucking everything thing in book at a minor problem ...

Thanks ... but he's not old he's 5 ...

His age is irrelevant.  Dogs can and do have problems at any age, including from birth (I have two that were born with spinal deformities causing pain), and through my work as a behaviourist I see dogs of all ages showing signs of pain and discomfort.

I was simply replying to someone pointing me to the article "old dog gets charley horse"

Or cruciate ligament, my Stafford did this and it was cruciate ligament but not torn .

was this a recurring problem? and if so did you have to have surgery or other treatment? ...mine's a staff/lab cross,  he looks like a tall staff and walks with that stiff hind leg gait that staffie's do.

That was me and I only linked to that article because it seemed to fit.   Other than the age thing!!

For my Stafford she did her 6wks crate rest and then we did no off lead so stayed on lead after about a month she was allowed off lead but had long line  for a little while(she has prey drive). She has never had any issues since so never needed to have surgery.
Good luck hope it's good news when you see vets

Thanks very much for your reply, mine has been fine for a week again which is why I'm veering towards it being a knee problem. He's never allowed off the lead because there is a lot of livestock where I live and he's very much a city rescue dog!
Normally we walk at least 7 miles a day (or did) but this last week I've cut it down to 3- 4 ish.
Have started him on the joint supplements , but if it happens again will take him to the vet.
