Can anyone tell me how much a Ridgeback puppy costs these days. Thank you
- By Lexy [gb] Date 28.08.20 19:13 UTC
If you look at the bottom of this page, it will give the prices for the last 18 years https://www.champdogs.co.uk/breeds/rhodesian-ridgeback  This will be for litters advertised, with a price, on Champdogs.

t's handy will have to look at my breed.  I know my first litter in 1995 were £400 and my last in 2019 £850.

In general, prices are HORRENDOUS, right across all breeds although there might be some signs that the BYBs who have been cashing in on the reduced supply may not be getting what they were when the Covid lockdown started.  I still think now is not the time to be buying a puppy, if that's your intention.   Or at least be very careful who you are dealing with!

Once the reputable breeders who curtailed their breeding plans, start again, prices may drop from the level they have been!

ps   Once our bloodline ended, I bought in one of my main breed, 10+ years ago now, and paid £800 for him, at 4 months and intended to be a show boy (that didn't work out).   Prices for puppies of my breed are easily into the £2Ks and higher at the moment.   More often than not not KC registered either and far from quality puppies, from their pictures.

Having contacted fellow breeders I respect, most are currently keeping around £900 - £950.

I needed to advise one of my former puppy buyers planning her first litter (from which I hope to buy a pup, to get my lines back) what she should charge.

The bitch was 4 in April, so this is her only chance, as she missed in April. Just waiting for her to come in season.

There is quite a range in the prices charged for Ridgie puppies - and that was the case even before COVID! The dearest does not necessarily mean the best! A lot of the puppies advertised on the puppy sales sites cost more than some of the reputable breeders would charge.

Please ensure that you buy a puppy that has come from properly health tested parents. Both parents should be hip and elbow scored, and one parent MUST be DNA tested for JME (juvenile myoclonic epilepsy) and DM (degenerative myelopathy). Some "breeders" will try to spin the line that these tests are only necessary for show dogs - this is not true!

It is a good idea to contact the breed clubs for recommendations for breeders. Breed club members have to abide by the clubs' codes of ethics re ages of breeding from bitches, frequency of breeding and only breeding from properly health tested parents. Feel free to message me if you would like. I have had Ridgebacks for over 35 years :)

We are talking to an owner of border terrier puppies at the moment, as everyone knows the prices are ridiculously high and finding the right puppy and being assured is a challenge. My sense is that the owner is very pleasant and willing to ensure we are happy, no pressure for a deposit. The mother is not slem tested, they are occasional breeders. I’m trying to track down the owner of the Sire, which is incorrect on the border terrier website ( original not current). The owner is advertising on pets4homes ( stud), but I have not heard back from her as yet. The owner of the bitch has sent me the kc registration, so I should be assured  This dog is supposedly on this website but I don’t know how to use function as a new member, can you help  ? There is apparently a lot of scamming going on, we have to travel a long way for this pup and can’t visit beforehand as only  advertised at 6 weeks , thank you !

Try here https://www.champdogs.co.uk/breeds/border-terrier for the breed, & perhaps here for the sire https://www.champdogs.co.uk/breeds/border-terrier/stud-dogs

Can you give us the names of the dogs? Otherwise it's a bit hard to look things up...

Trouble at the moment is that MyKC is offline until the 30th.

Re current prices.   I've just seen one of my main breed advertised for £1500 - he's 7 and is advertised as 'used at stud'.   I took the people to task and was told that asking such a figure would prevent him from being bought and sold on....... really?    I've written back suggesting that even at that price, he could still be sold on (especially re the 'stud dog' comment although stud prices haven't gone quite to the same level as puppy prices - yet).  The price for puppies of the breed are higher than £1500.    Further that if they vet the new home properly selling on should be prevented ..... and that they might consider co-ownership, at least until they can be sure the home is a genuine one.    He's related to my much missed boy (one line back to my boy's sire) and I could be tempted, but not at that price!!   Since I've been told that if the price puts people off, they don't care.   What does that tell you!

If re-homing an entire adult (I have not known an older dog sold on in my breed), then endorsements can be placed, in the same way as on pups.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 27.09.20 09:34 UTC
That's an interesting point.

In my breed stud fees as far as I can tell have always been the price of a puppy.

I think this is quite common in numerically small breeds, where males may only ever sire a very few litters.

In my breed a male that has sired more than half a dozen litters in his lifetime could end up quite an influential sire.

Of course, but reading the answer, I seriously doubt they'd do that.   They could of course, castrate him, but again I doubt they'll do this either.

Re stud prices - in my breed, and I think most others, the cost of a stud service was usually the cost of one puppy.   It's all changed now
