Hi all,

Been struggling to sleep. My beautiful 10 week old Cockapoo took  a ‘swan dive’ off the sofa last night...heard a loud yelp. Waited for 2/3 hours to be sure it wasn’t shock but eventually took her to a 24 hour vet.
After an X-ray I was told that luckily it was a clean fracture to the tibia...back right leg; she was bandaged up.
This morning I took her to our registered vets and was again told to be optimistic. They removed the bandage a re-dressed with a better splint.
I appreciate that we must cage her as much as possible and give her plenty of love. She’s in good spirits, eating well and seems in little pain.

Has anyone any experience or reassurance you can give?

Much appreciated

Ollie

Oh what a shame, I haven't personally any experience of broken bones, other than toes, in dogs, but two friends dogs had similar breaks, one dog was kept on very strict cage rest, carried out to the loo etc and then very gradually lead walking introduced and increased, you would never know now that he ever had a broken leg, he's an international champion now, a beautifully sound mover. The other dog managed to get loose and run upstairs the day she came back from the vets, another time she jumped off the sofa etc etc and now 3 years later still limps and will need painkillers for life.

So, it seems to me that how well she heals is very dependent on how still you can keep her, and that is difficult with a young pup. You're going to have your work cut out keeping her entertained with brain games and puzzles, things that will tire her out without leaping around.

Try raw knuckle bones, kongs, lickimats and have a look on amazon at dog brain games.

Thank you for your comments. I can’t ever remember feeling so low....I just pray that she makes a full recovery.

Friend of mine has a now deeply boxer who broke her leg when very young . A little older than yours bit still very young.  Pup was kept on cage rest and very carefully taken out for wees etc.  Pup fully recovered and had no issues .
I can understand how upset u must feel but there Is every chance of total recovery .

good news is at that age she will heal very quickly.  a lot quicker then an old dog.  horrible thing to happen though and so upsetting but not your fault- puppies do some crazy things and you cannot always grab them fast enough. mine terrorised me at that age with leaping off stuff and crashing into walls.  entertainment- make a start on very basic training on health rug- she learn little things like the command 'look at me' - very useful that when older and you want their attention, quite a lot can be learnt without much movement and learning is tiring.

Thank you all for your comments, been a huge comfort and I’ll hopefully get a better night’s sleep tonight! Puppy seems to be ok and in good spirits so need to stay positive.
