Is it true that a female dog can only hold a small
Amount of sperm and the rest will leak out. I was at a dog clinic today and I got talking to a couple before me who had done a breeding By artificial insemination and there female leaked quite a bit of sperm they wernt concerned by this as they said it happens quite a bit as the bitch was only a small Breed Dog (miniature Dachund.

Absolutely normal. The tie ensures that enough seminal fluid stays inside the bitch for long enough to get past the cervix; the rest flows out when the pair separate.

Thanks for the reply this mating wasn’t done by a natural mating the female was done by artificial insemination but I suppose it’s the same as outcome anyway as the cervix can only hold a certain amount.

Remember, it's just the same with people as well.

We had a male who only ever managed a slip tie.   I had a very good friend who basically could mate chairs to tables and as mine is a breed that's not that easy to get to mate, we took him to her and she did the biz, holding him in for a while.   When he came out (graphic) there was usually some spillage.   She told me to upend the bitch to maximise (she thought!) her changes of taking in as much of the  semen as possible.   He only missed to one of his occasional matings (I had him at public stud but was choosy about who used him) and she came back next time with the same zero result.  She then used our other male who tied (her next season, not the same one) and same result.   Her breeder took her to another dog but again nothing.   By that time she was getting up there in age so she gave up!!

So yes, it's not unusual.

Haha, as the owner of several stud dogs I’ve done many matings! Semen is extremely mobile and whilst the tie is taking place it gives it time to swim to where it should be, what leaks out after the tie has broken is a clear prostatic liquid known as the third fraction.

Spencer1, I can definitely tell you there's semen that comes back out too - I wanted to check a dog wasn't firing blanks so I took a sample of some of what came back out and took a look under the microscope and I can affirm there were lots of swimmers in there!

Am trying to mate my female spaniel 3yrs old the male is 6 yrs old neither have ever mated he did try twice but she yelped there both interested in each other but nothing happens now not sure if she just keep leaving them to it or give up its been 3 days now any ideas very much appreciated thank you x

It's not really a good idea to try to breed together two dogs which have never mated before. It's best if one dog has an idea what to do, so if you have a maiden bitch, to go to an experienced stud dog.

I would stop trying with this dog and go find an experienced stud who will know whether she is ready or not... and won't be put off by a little yelp.

Are either you or the dog owner experienced in managing matings? It doesn't always go smoothly, especially when neither dog nor bitch knows what they're doing. It's highly likely that the bitch will need to be held, and the dog directed into the right position, if a tie is to be achieved.
It would probably be best to forget about mating at this season and research an experienced (health tested) dog for next season.
