Hi, Does anybody know of any vets that hip score in West Yorkshire not showing n google.  Many Thanks

All Vets will x-ray for the Hip cheme, though some do this rarely and have not the experience to get the best views, this can skew the result by several points.  As a result most people find they get better x-rays from an othopaedic specialist.

Also many prefer a Vet who uses sedation rather than GA, this makes the procedure more affordable, as it is the Vet that is the major cost, not the scoring, and of course people don't like unnesasary GA's.

As I don't drive I used to get the local vets (various) to x-ray, but always found my scores though acceptble seemed to be a few points higher than littermate3s scored under specialists.

Since I started using Ortho vets, or a someone specialising in canine hi x-rays, the results I ahvve had have improved, and seem to be more in keeping with scored litter mates.

If you join the FB group called 'BVA Health Testing' (or something) there are loads of recommendations for vets all over the UK for hip or elbow scoring.

Thanks for the fb link I am just waiting for approval- I have got a quote from my normal vets (calder) for £781 which includes everything not sure if this is average, high or low. Would be nice to get  a few quotes. X Chris

My Vet charged me £140 last month for hip scoring my large gundog breed. (Dog was 29.9kg). Plus the £70 to BVA for scoring.

We are Angus, Scotland if that helps.

That's very reasonable indeed.

I used to use a vet in Cheshire but unfortunately he's retired. On my list of alternatives are Moy Vets (on the west coast near Cleveleys) who quoted me £218.35 for hips and elbows under sedation for a Labrador, with the £127.20 BVA fee on top of that, Mike Gilding ( in Cheshire) quoted £320 which includes the BVA fee. I'm in West Yorkshire and prefer to travel to an experienced vet.

That's incredibly high, and I'm sad to say having used Calder in the past I wouldn't ever do so again.  They sold me out of date supplements (which weren't really needed) for a lactating bitch, and didn't check out my concerns about her potentially developing mastitis, and this was supposedly at their branch which gives specialist canine reproduction advice.

I will be travelling over to use Moy vets (just google moy vets hip scoring) when I get my current youngster done (Labrador).  I have had questionable results using a vet not practised in taking plates for submission to the BVA before, so tend now to travel to use an experienced radiographer, who can also give me an idea of what sort of results to expect.

omg!!! That sounds ridiculously high. If you are prepared to travel I would recommend Tom Gilding (Gilding Veterinary Orthopaedics). At the moment he is running weekend appointments out of PhysioVet in Crewe, but he is opening his own referral clinic in Crewe shortly. I took my 3 year old bitch to him in July and have just been back this weekend with two youngsters sired by one of my dogs. Hips only are £220 (and that includes the BVA submission fee). Hips and elbows were £320. All done under sedation, not GA.

I had gone to Moy Vets in the past and Michelle does a great job. Unfortunately for us Euan Bryson at Hampton Vets inn Malpas retired this year and I didn't want to chance going to a different vet in that practice. Tom was a recommendation from a friend of mine and he is absolutely excellent.
