Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Slip mating?
- By Chichis [gb] Date 20.08.20 11:25 UTC
Hi everyone I'm not a newbie although I just had to re register here on champdogs, I have had several successful litters in the last few years with a few of my girls, but this one was a new experience to me so I wanted to I guess get some reassurance on this.

So as title suggests I've had a slip mating, my girl who has had 2 litters in the past always stood for the dog & tied, this is her last litter I found a stud I have never used a kc imported Russian boy who has been proven many times, has had all tests done etc I contacted the owner and we set up a meeting when my girl was ready, she was and we set off it was over an hour away but I though well worth the travelling, this was 2 days ago now, we arrived and I went in with my girl when I saw him I realised that he was super small I was really surprised at his size but his owner did say that he would be fine as he as had slightly bigger bitches than mine, we let them meet and after a few minutes they were playing she started standing for him but she is taller so we had to help a little, the owner had me put my girl on the sofa with blankets and then a few more blankets for him to stand on due to his size, took a few mins but he got in did the 'climb the ladder' bit then his owner held him there it was maybe 4-5 minutes I was surprised at how short it was, he then slipped out and he went in his pen, nothing was dripping from him or her after, I paid the stud fee and arranged to come the day after, we came back and although my bitch stood he just didn't get in this time, I was disappointed as I ussally pay for 2 ties, the owner has offered her other kc stud for next time as he is taller if she doesnt take, I'm not sure he did tie even if it was only for 5 mins is it a slip tie ? This is my first experience with a slip so it's all very new to me and im doubting she will take, as he is so much smaller could that be why? Any advice about this would be really great as I'm thinking I should of maybe found a stud more her size although I didn't know how small he was thanks if you read all this

That sounds like a tie, albeit a short one, not a slip mating. If he ejaculated inside her (climbing the ladder sounds as if he did) then there's no reason why it shouldn't be successful.

Thanks for the reply jeangenie it was short wich is why I guess I'm doubting it will result in pregnancy, I wasnt sure if it was a tie or not if it was I agree it was just a short one, his owner was holding him and i was holding my girl so i couldn't see much, he definitely climbed the ladder and then stayed there without turning on my girl for approx 4-5 mins, due to his size his owner didn't try to turn him, then he slipped out, I guess I'll be questioning it all until she is or she isn't, first time for me I've always had good ties with all studs I've met.

I have the same breed and agree with jeangenie.  I have had boys not turn several times.  The bitches were still pregnant.  You don't actually need 2 matings if the time is right, and it certainly sounds to me as if it was.If he climbed the ladder I would not be in the least worried about 4-5 minutes.

Even with a tie dogs don't have to turn, personally I think its nicer if they don't. You certainly could have a successful litter from what you already have, it isn't a given to get a litter from a tie

Thank you everyone, I can't seem to reply to posts

It would have been nice to have the two matings, whatever - it just means you cover a wider range of dates.

But I agree with the others - the first mating sounds like a tie, and there is no correlation between length of the tie and chances of pregnancy - a tie is a tie is a tie whether it's 5 mins or 25mins.

When he couldn't mate the second time, you COULD have opted to use her other stud and then DNA tested the litter so you know who sired which puppies. Or you could have AI-ed if you know how to do that...

Lexy I agree.  The reason I don't mind my boys staying on top is the fact that they lick the girls ears.  Sweet!

Although your posts didn't show on CD, they turned up ok on my emails.

Just wanted to say - you seemed worried about the stud you used being so tiny.  I always used boys a lot smaller than my bitches.  Hopefully to help the size of the whelps.  As Chi's are devils for having difficulty giving birth, I didn't want huge puppies.

Be sure that you familiarise yourself with uterine inertia.

Thanks for letting me know jean I kept trying to repost but only a line of it was posted, it's because he was so small yes as he couldn't get a good grip on my girl that was why I was worried, I also.always use smaller boys as I dont want my girls to end up having trouble, they definitely are due to the size of their heads when they are born i've only ever had one puppy get stuck but a visit to the vet helped the vet didn't have to do anything it was the car drive there
