Hi we are looking for advise, we are getting a Doberman puppy soon very excited, we are looking for advise on Insurance , diet and anything else wemade need to know. We have been reading up to but want to make sure we are not missing anything. Also how long and when are you able to leave them, it would only be short time gaps. Any advise is very well appreiciated .
Thank you

All of your questions need to be asked of the breeder.  Especially diet.   Most good breeders send their puppies off with 6 weeks (?) insurance which you can extend, or choose insurance of your own after that expires.  Puppies coming to their new homes shouldn't be 'left' for much time at all.

I hope you are not paying the huge overinflated prices being asked currently!

Food , u will get as many answers as there is food so at least for.now stay with what the breeder advises .

I feed raw but that although not hard does need research to understand what u are doing even if u use a commercial.complete .

Insurance always a cover for.life policy and tread carefully with small print . Dont jump for.the cheapest ones .
U will hear good and bad in all .my preference is petplan after.many years and using others
Looking at review sites is helpful

As for leaving pup I start with just going in another room for a.couple.of.minites and building up from there before actually leaving all alone in the house . I also crate train and making that a safe happy place to be .
Your breeder should.be a mine of information assuming your breeder as I hope.they are is one of.the good.ones

buy the book 'The Perfect Puppy' by Gwen Bailey.   That will help you a great deal with first year of your puppy

Brill many thanks for the info, we have a good breeder and she has now told me lots too, thanks for your valid reply, what are your thoughts on a cage, she has advised and heard others too.Do you need a cage and a day pen ?

for me a crate is something I always use but it must be  done slowly and carefully.  Pup need to feel it is  their safe secure place not somewhere they are left for hours.
I havnt used a pen and don't  see it necessary as I prefer to use baby gates across a door and in our case pups remain in the kitchen which is quite large and  where I spend a lot of time until they are house trained or can be closely watched in another room . Depends i suppose on your set up . Remember pup will need to be taken outside  frequently  for toilet training
If u search here on crates you will see other answers about how to train pup happily

Hey.... Everything I say now is meant with the very best of intentions and with the dogs well being at the forefront of my thoughts.
I am assuming from the wording of your posts that this will be your first Dobie or infact your very first dog??
Please, please think very long and hard about your decision.... No amount of YouTube or reading will prepare you for puppy or Dobie ownership, or to be lucky enough to be owned by this gorgeous, often misunderstood, breed.
I could give loads of advice and helpful pointers but my biggest would be socialise, socialise, socialise.. and then socialise and practice some more...
They are the finest and most loyal and stoic of breeds I have had the pleasure to be owned by.
A dream with children, in the house and love the sofa.  That being said they also love a good run and a job to do as well.
Please also bear in mind they grow to be very big dogs these days with a mahoosive curly tail and European input. Obviously being prepared for an above average bark per minute goes also without saying.
I would feed the very best quality food you can afford. In my opinion that would be raw for this breed. Steer clear of ball chucking, will only hype up, and increase the risk of injury.
Open your heart and understand them at 5am!!
We create these Diva's so it is up to us to maintain them!! This will be your dog in a million, protect his heart as he will protect yours. Enjoy getting up earlier you will be rewarded..
