Just got back from vets, Bob has developed a lump on his leg it's next to his dew claw and seems quite hard. The name of the tablets he has given is PBZ200mg this is the only thing it says on bottle apart from bob's name date ect, the vet said these are anti inflammatory's.
Has anyone heard of these, where can I find out what the active ingredient is?

PBZ is the abbreviated name of phenylbutazone. If you put it in a search engine, there's a lot of information about it. Depends what you want to know.

Thanks Val I have just never heard of it before and wondered if anyone on here had. I've just run a quick search and it seems this drug can damage the respiratory system so won't be giving bob any till i've phoned the vet in morning.

There are always side effects to everything Alison. It's a matter of weighing up the side effects with the benefits! Not always easy.

Yes there are side effects to everything but i'm not willing to accept these ones!!

It's unfortunate, when they put pills in a bottle, that we don't have the opportunity of reading the in-packet leaflet which lists contraindications, side effects etc! Mind you, most clients think that Vets, like Doctors, are G*ds and accept their advice without question.
As an ex Veterinary nurse, you can see which side of the fence I sit on!

My dad used to take this for his gout. He thought it was the best but the doc took him off it several years ago.

Charlie has been on an anti inflammatory for his strained leg, however, ive stopped it until we go back to the vets tommorow, as since sunday he has been thrwing up in the morning. Just a small amount which seem sto be like bile - other than that he's his usual chirpy self, but as anti inflams can have unwanted effects on the stomach in humans, i'm assuming it can cause the same in dogs. DOubt he needs them now anyway as his limp is 99% gone - just for a few secs when he gets up after lying down now - can't wait till we can take him for walks again, and burn off some of that mischief making energy :D

Hi Majix, if the a/inflammatory was Rimadyl, I think one of the side effects is vomitimg & you should tell your vet. Think that`s what the manufacturers say anyway :)

Alison,
have just read about your dog with his lump, this has nothing to do with medication but have you ever heard of the products called bio-flow??
i can only speak as i find and this product which is a magnetic collar has worked for my dog and a cat .there are lots of different magnetic products on the market but bio-flow is the "only" one patented with this particular type of magnet.
people who have tried these products have reported back with their findings and the list of ailments they claimed to have helped with is immense.ligament and bone injuries to epilpsy all appeared to have benefited.my doberman ruptured a crucia ligament last june,in july they operated but this left him permenantly lame with no excercise allowed which drove him nuts and to fit the artifical ligament his knee joint had to be damaged in order for the ligament repair work to be carried out which has caused arthritus,£80 a month medication he was on for the rest of his life, then i saw this collar advertised, for £30 i thought i would try it as they give a money back guarentee if not happy.hand on heart it took 2 hrs for my dog to stop limping and he has been wearing it for 6 weeks and hasnt looked back!! he was lame for 8 months,he is back to full freedom walks and is as active as before the operation. he hasnt had an ounce of medication since wearing the collar.i tried one on my old cat,i took her in 6 yrs ago and from the day i got her she has done nothing but constantly sneeze and sneeze and sounded like a coffee perculator.no medication helped,i have been told by the vet that it appears that sometime in her life she had cat flu which wasnt treated and it left scarring on the lungs which caused permenant fluid on the lung.thought i had nothing to loose as again money back guarentee.36hrs later she is 100% clear,no sneezing,no gurgling.humans can lie and also be affected by physcologcal affects of beleiving something will work so it appears to but animals cant.moving on i have for the first time in my life started suffering from RSI so i bought one for me (not a collar but a wrist band) i have been wearing it for just over a week, although a lot slower to work which has been explained to me why today is the first time i have been pain free,
all i will say is please try bio-flow dont be sceptic, just try it and if it doesnt work then you get your money back,it has helped race horses rabbits pigs, goats, cats dogs, sheep even an arthritic elephant!!
this message has gone on long enough but i really wanted to let you know that a simple magnet really does work, even the company doesnt know how it works but they just know it does and now so do i on three different species suffering from three different ailments.
to stop boring everyone from this large message if you want to know more please drop me an e-mail as you cant buy this in the shopsi came by it by accident i will forward on to you or anyone else how to buy them.

best wishes
jackie
ps.....it might just work and your dog gets off the anti imflamitories which i know a lot have side effects .

Hi Jackie
Thanks for that info:)
Just to let everyone know bob's lump has gone down but not completely, however he has now developed a spot like lump in his ear, and has now been transferred to steroids to make this new lump disappear. The new lump looks more like a blister come spot(I know what I mean lol). He now has to wear a lampshade ( poor thing )
