I have a 7 month golden retriever who had entropion which has now righted itself. I have noticed that her third eyelid on both eyes is often visible and sometimes it is reddy brown rather than just brown. The inside of her lower eye is also redder some days than others. She is in no pain or discomfort. I took her to my vet, she was seen by a locum, and as is usual at the moment, she was taken away for examination so I was not able to discuss the issue in any detail with the vet. His diagnosis was that there was nothing wrong with her eyes. However the day of the appointment was one of the days when the eyelid was a normal colour and not red. Has any one else have experience of this issue?

I would photograph it carefully next time it flares up so you have something to show the vet

I should add that one eye in particular has an excess of white discharge. This morning it covered over a 1/3 rd of her eye. Never had this in my previous retrievers or my older one. I have tried to get a photo but it is very difficult.

Why don't, when you phone for an appointment, which I assume, like with my vet, you do, you ask to be seen  by the vet you prefer there AND when the eye(s) look particularly bad?   Your vet should be prepared to talk to you outside - as mine did when I had to take Teazel in after a warty growth on her front leg started to bleed alarmingly.  I booked a slot, took her in, rang the bell and one of the two vets I prefer came out and allowed me to discuss at length what was going on, which included him checking her mouth (she has a broken tooth in there which I did not know about ), and talking about her heart murmur.   When he brought her back out he had bandaged her leg, prescribed a/bs and told me at length exactly what the situation is.   She's booked in for surgery a week tomorrow.

The third eyelid doesn't normally react unless there's something not right, and there shouldn't be a discharge.

Sometimes video shows stuff better than a photo, so try to take a video clip of it all as well...

Thanks for the replies. If things were normal I would try & get an appointment with my preferred vet but there is a long wait for anything other than an emergency with any of the vets. The vet nurses aren't working yet either. My best bet I think is to photo or video the eye before I rush to clean it. Thanks for the confirmation that this white discharge isn't normal. I thought so but it is nice to have it confirmed.

I'm a bit confused about entropion 'righting itself' unless the puppy had loads of wrinkle (as in baby Bassets) which, as the head develops, may mean there's not quite as much surplus skin across the head?

For me, however, any discharge (yellow would be more likely to suggest infection) would tell me something isn't right - and it could be the entropion actually hasn't righted itself?   And the third eyelid reacting also says the situation isn't right.

As anything to do with eyes I regard as 'an emergency' I'd have another go at your vet, or find another!!

I took my girl back to have her leg checked and redressed this morning and actually went in with her for the first time (waiting area only, with a mask on) as she didn't want to go with the vet on duty this time.

I don't understand really why your vet is only accepting emergency patients ...  things are freeing up, little by little now.

I have been to both my usual vet and a referral vet this week .
General vet is seeing everyone ermgency or not .including vaccinations and puppy checks .chat in carpark or by telephone then animal.take in for examination or treatment.getting appointments is back to normal as well .referral vet the same.
I would give them another ring and see what's going on . Or maybe a new vet ?
Mine used to get occasional white discharge and it was allergy related non infectious
