Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / What is the best day to mate your bitch

Hi,

I just wanted to ask breeders advice as to when they think the best day in a bitches season is to mate her? Day 10 - 14 ?

There is no answer to this, bitches can be fertile & take to matings from day 4 to day 21 & it can vary with every season(not that you would mate every season of course)!

The average fertile time is between days 10 and 15, but some ovulate earlier and some later, and very few bitches ovulate on the same day every season. There have been litters from matings as early as day 4 and as late as day 20. The best way to be sure is to blood test to determine the actual day of ovulation.

When she is fertile.

Neither for my dogs, so have never taken day 10 - 14 as meaning a thing.  I've had bitches ovulate on day 4 and day 28.

If a bitch could potentially ovulate on day 4, when would progesterone testing actually start? I’m not sure I’d want to be taking bloods every day if she then didn’t ovulate until day 28. Expensive and stressful for the bitch surely?

I did this with my bitch some years ago now, and started on day 5, as she was a maiden bitch, and it was really the last good opportunity for a litter from her as she was 5.  It took 5 tests and I drove the bloods up to Idexx myself, so spent about £500 at least just on that alone.  My bitch wasn't hugely bothered, she loves seeing the vet anyway, but the progesterone testing was a bit hit and miss, she had just gone over by the time I got the last set of results, and we didn't achieve a tie, but thankfully she did take.

I was talking about 2 different bitches.  The bitch that ovulated on day 4 was tested as soon as swelling showed.  I had tried to get a litter from her twice, and this was the last chance, or she would be spayed.

The bitch that ovulated on  day 28 had no testing done.

Hi first time posting something here so apologies if I’m jumping on the post trying to find how to post without replying to a thread.

I have recently just finished mating my female And she’s still bleeding I no this can be normal however I’m a little concerned as it’s gone like a dark red colour it’s been like that for a couple
Of days to be on the safe side I have a vet appointment tommorow morning as my vet can’t fit me in today She’s acting fine in herself still active and playful. Anybody else had similar symptoms and could offer advice.

Thanks

Nothing to worry about.  Only if there is foul smelling discharge would I be off  to the vet

Most, in fact all but one, of my girls went to a light straw colour and flagged like mad by around day 11.   At that point they were mated and after that, would have little to no significant discharge right through to the end of their season (determined by a general calming down from my boys).  I'd give them a bath and it was pretty much back to normal, whether mated or not.   I only had one who, with two matings on days 11 and 13, went back to a more pronounced coloured discharge.   And yes, I was concerned but she was fine in herself and eventually that ceased.   She had an uncomplicated pregnancy and produced 9 of probably the best puppies (albeit via C.Section) we bred.

I didn't involve my then vet at the time.

Not sure what the worry is. Blood stopping, blood going dark red, blood getting lighter - it's all normal.
