Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Weight on bitch

Hi. I have a super active 13 month old German shepherd bitch, not spayed she is a medium size and I fell she needs another 2.5kg on at least, the problem is i can not get her to gain weight not for the lack of trying. She gets a good dry food that is high in protein and fat, get an egg most day (I have free range chickens) and does get raw meet added to food maybe once a week, she is training to track so also gets cheese, sausage ect doing that. She is fed twice a day around 320g each meal any more then it just comes out of her and this is more than the bag guides, and vet is happy that she is healthy. Any idea's on how I can get her to put some more weight on she is not a fussy dog happy to eat most things. Many thanks

I found with both my gsd they went through a skinny period around the age yours is and don't really fill out until after 3 years
Others have said the same including my latter gsd breeder .
As long as she is fit and well I think it's just her development

At 13 months your bitch is still growing & maturing so shouldn't look"finished".

It can also depend on what "type" your bitch is. The Alsatian type are heavier than the International/working line type, but both types need to mature slowly so that the epiphyseal plates are not damaged by putting too much weight too early

I'd put her totally onto raw and feed the fattier meats, like lamb, beef and duck.

I'm not into GSDs specifically, but in general, with medium to large breeds, my main breed included, the frame is there by around 7 months, but it can take quite while yet, for them to fully body up - especially the males.   I had a boy who I started showing at around 6 months but at a time when it was all about big, heavy, I soon felt I was wasting my time with him and withdrew him until he was close on 2 years before trying again.

Actually the slow maturing lines often do far better eventually, provided they are generally healthy, to take their time maturing.

You might talk to her breeder who should know how his/her line develops.  Has she been wormed?  I'd stay away from high protein food too - all too often that forces too much growth, too fast.   Again, not necessary.

At 13 months she's still very much a baby, and i wouldn't expect her to start filling out till she's at least 18 months. If she's still very skinny at 2 years (bearing in mind most dogs nowadays are too fat) then you can start adding weight-gain ingredients. Right now being lean is much healthier for her joints.

A lot will depend on her frame and the genetics behind her. Some take ages to fill out while some may look finished at a young age.
Tripe and lamb, raw can help put weight on but usually they fill out when they mature on.

She is a more athletic type and I don't do fat dogs but she is even for me light and not like not like my other gsds

My friends who have working line GSDs( not UK obedience longcoats)never have "finished" looking dogs under 18 months old. As long as she is has good muscle development commensurate with her age, I would not look to add bulk to try to make her look better. If she is of the international/working line type she will not be fully mature until she is at least 18 months old & possibly 24 months.
Some dogs simply take longer too mature & to try to speed maturity can prove contra productive

I have had several GSDs and nearly all have taken 18 to 24 months to body up. I thought my present BSD bitch was underweight when she was young and asked the vet for advise. The vet wasn't worried at all, said as long as her skin wasn't tight over her ribs she was fine. By 2 years she was fine.

All dogs are different, even within a breed. My 4 1/2 year old GWP is what I would term as skinny. But he is fine. His motto is why walk when you can run! I can't put weight on him. Just be mindful of getting those growth plates finished and fused on your GSD, a big dog takes time to grow and maybe this one is going to take a bit longer than your others. I wouldn't overfeed her, slow and steady best way.
