Hi all,

No blood tests to check ovulation - going off my own boy at home who knows when the girls are ready. She is on day 12 today

We travelled miles down to Devon for my chosen stud - this mating as been planned since last year.

The bitch was flagging and standing for the other dog and bitches in the house last night - very flirty and eager.
Travelled down today.

At 11:30 we have 3 slip matings - the stud clearly ejaculated inside the bitch but the tie did not hold, once he ejaculated on the first time he was out within 5 seconds, the second time he was held in place and still no tie and was out within a minute and the third he was held there for 2-3 minutes and again came out.

Obviously would prefer a good tie, but we are happy enough that he defiantly ejaculated first, just missed the final stage of the mating. We are back tomorrow for another attempt after 24 hours.

She is a maiden bitch so I know this can happen, stud boy knows his job and is very good with a very experienced handler and two assistants.

My concern is her discharged changed from a bright blood red to a pinky-red almost like a strawberry cream sweet - this was last night around 7 pm - HOWEVER now tonight by 6 pm her discharge is back to red blood again.

If I touch her rear or tail she flags and you can almost see her vulva moving so she is definitely showing signs she is ready, the boys certainly think so too.

Should I be worried about a slip mating like this? Would a pregnancy be more likely with the 3 slip matings today and a 'hopeful' tie tomorrow?
Should I be worried of her discharge colour changing back to red blood so soon?

Thank you for any advice.
Both dogs are of good quality, health tests etc and our waiting list is full (pre covid - our puppy buyers have waited since last November and none have gone elsewhere and have everything crossed for this mating)

TO ADD.

She did not stand for any of my females of my boy at home before yesterday (day 11)

The discharge means nothing to be honest. No you shouldn’t be worried about a slip tie, the dog has already ejaculated a bit before you decided to hold them in place, I’m surprised you got 3 at the same time though?! Sounds like you are just a touch early, but should still be pretty safe since sperm will last a good few days anyway. I expect you’ll have more luck tomorrow.

The stud dog has never had a slip tie before and the handler wanted to let him try again if he was still interested. He was not phased by the next 2, but we wanted to stop there for sperm quality.

I am hoping tomorrow will be better.

You can get a successful litter, from just one slip mating.....

Her discharge may well change if he has entered her and she has received sperm - stirs everything up lol

You would not have had three breedings here because it's physically impossible. Once the stud dog has ejaculated, he needs time to produce more sperm. How long this takes depends on the dog. Some can produce sperm of adequate quality for one day later, but all will have made more by 48hours later. Immediately though - no. He may get an erection but he won't produce anything. Once a dog has ejaculated, that's your lot for that breeding attempt and you may as well stop until he has had time to make more.

Discharge colour means nothing really.

Dogs will often stand a day or so early, so that there is sperm in there for when the eggs ripen. And slip matings often happen when you are a bit early as well...

If I were you, I would not repeat the very next day but would do 48 hours later. You've already put some sperm in there with the slip mating but you will probably have better timing if you wait 48 hours instead of 24 hours...

Thanks for that info. The stud dog handler is very experienced and wanted to try a second mating. He did the stair climbing dance each mating yesterday with his penis swollen after he slipped out. I just assumed he could produce sperm for all 3 of the matings.

We did try again today and she was flagging much less and he was less interested but did manage to mate. Again no tie but the breed and assistants held them together for a good few minutes to try and help achieve a tie.

My vets tells me it is common with maiden bitches.

We were not able to stay another day and go 48 hours later so had to do 24hrs.

Fingers crossed. But if not we can return next season.

Thanks Lext. I am hopful.

The breeder has had so few slip matings in her life and never has had litters from them but friends of hers and mime have.

I am hopful but not putting all my eggs in one basket

The stud dog has to often get further in than is easy or than he realises with maiden bitches. I've had experienced studs, jump on, pump a few times, jump off, jump on, try to get it right and jump off and so on - and then suddenly he hits the spot and knows and then continues and ties. It takes an experienced stud to realise this though...

Thanks onetwothreefour.

He was an experienced stud and he defiantly knew his job. You could tell her had 'reached the spot' from the bitches reaction.

The stud dog handler believed it was more an issue with my bitch not holding onto him back or her moving ever so slightly right before the tie could take place but after the 'climb the stairs dance'.

I will get an ultrasound booked at 35 days and see if we are lucky.
