My female dog has been having episodes of diarrhea every since she has given birth. I have noticed when she needs to go to the bathroom, she becomes really restless and leaves the puppies. Is this normal behavior? I took her to the vet Friday (7/10) shortly after giving birth bc i was afraid she had no passed all placenta. She was given oxytocin to expel any placenta that was left. She has been having blood come out with her stool but also i find blood on the floor at other times. So i am unsure if this is from the shot or if she has blood in the stool. I notified the vet and she told me to call tomorrow (7/14) if it has not cleared up. Tonight, in the middle of the night, i have had to take her out several times to poop. Right before having to go out she would become very restless and i also noticed her digging at the floor. Just wondering if this is something i should be concerned about as first signs of eclampsia or if maybe it’s just related to having diarrhea and the constant need to poop. She is eating and drinking lots (more than i expected really), no problems peeing or pooping, & lets the pups nurse well from her. She’s very interested in the pups & immediately as soon as she comes in from the bathroom, she’s ready to be back with them. At this point i have not taken her temperature, i plan to do so in the morning when i am able to get a thermometer.
Runny poop is very common after whelping and during lactation. There are huge hormonal and digestive/feeding changes going on here, so it's understandable if you get runny poops. Blood in poop can simply be caused by the poop irritating the small blood vessels lining the bowel and isn't necessarily an indication of anything to worry about.
Are you supplementing with additional calcium? That is essential for preventing eclampsia and quite high dosages are needed. You might want to do a search for the subject on the forum as it has come up before. Tums are the best source of calcium at hand, short-term.
