Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Which breeds are among the NOISIEST (loudest) of all LOL ..?
- By compassion Date 11.07.20 11:39 UTC
German Shepherds have always been my favourite breed of all.

I know of someone who had a litter of German Shepherd pups which upset all the neighbours because the pups were just too noisy   therefore the breeder spayed his bitch a few months later never to breed again.

"According to a test conducted on 26 dogs from different breeds, the bark of a German Shepherd was found to be louder than the sound of a moving truck which emitted 86 decibels of sound. Other tests revealed that some German Shepherds can even make sounds as loud as 106 decibels"

Just wondering are there many other breeds who are as loud as German Shepherds or possibly even louder ....?

Are you talking about pitch or decibel levels or just how frequent they make noise?
- By Agility tervs [gb] Date 11.07.20 13:14 UTC
Have you ever heard a Australian Shepherd doing agility? My daughter's Aussie was far noisier than any of my GSDs when he was younger. For the most ear piercing I think the prize goes to my male Belgian Shepherd.

Nova scotia duck tolling retrievers have a reputation of screaming their heads off when excited

Everything really (noisy/loud in general) I would imagine some breeds like to bark more than others though

My Pomeranian x chihuahua was definitely the highest pitch and frequent Barker of mine . He bark cut right through u .
My gsd had a loud deep bark but didn't bark often and the flatocoat only barks if there are foxes around and although deep isn't frequent.
So imo having all 3 at once at one time  it's the pomx no contest .
In fact her bark was the one and only thing about her we didn't like .her character was lovely

Another vote for toller

whippet going up the stairs to the hall where her training class was. noise was unreal.   same squealing they make when getting ready to race- terrible racket...   she adored her class and was just beside herself with excitement on way in.   apparently somewhat unnerving to new early arrivals who wondered what the hell was coming up stairs to join them,

my first Weimaraner was very loud but only barked if there was something real to bark at- like someone standing at door, fox etc

my 2nd Weimaraner sounded like a seal which was unfortunate as she barked at everything given half a chance.

Most unpleasant is Toller, volume has to be large number of sled teams all in harness ready for the start of races

Norwegian Elkhound, they are bred to bark when hunting elk in the forests so they can be tracked by the hunters. We always say that ours bark at the sound of a butterfly's wings!! Once our girl gets her barking head on it's very hard to get her to be quiet. I'd love to see Victoria Stillwell try her training techniques on my 2, it wouldn't work!
- By suejaw Date 11.07.20 16:23 UTC
Border Collies when doing agility are noisy whatsits.
I know a fair few spaniels, ESS who like to bark for the sake of it.
Poodle crosses I know are highly vocal for the sake of it.

Beagles can yell the place down when they want to. Mine hated the car and yelled for the whole journey. Beardies can be loud too but they are bred to gather sheep at a distance so the shepherd needs to know where they are.
- By Sleeping_Lion Date 11.07.20 17:45 UTC
Foxhound, when she starts you can't hear anything else.

It's a 'scream' that goes right through me.

Most unpleasant is Toller, volume has to be large number of sled teams all in harness ready for the start of races   - Horrendous !!

Huskies at a dog show.. omg the noise..  couldn't live with that. Also some of the terriers too, they just don't stop
- By RozzieRetriever Date 11.07.20 20:18 UTC
Tibetan terriers sheesh. Next doors bichon.....

I always dread walking past trolleys of pomeranians at shows - their high pitched barks seem so much louder to me than bigger dogs.

My papillon is pretty loud when he feels like it as well, mostly when I’m just dropping off to sleep. ;) And there’s no warning, just straight into his loudest woo woo woo noise because he heard another dog *thinking* about barking several miles away. ;)

My old lab at least had the decency to prepare me with a couple of little quiet wuh sounds before a proper bark!

When working in kennels - GSDs.   Also Jackies.   My Whippet makes quite a racket when somebody is at the door.

I sometimes walk past a house that has a whole pack of them, mostly they're quiet but sometimes they howl in unison, it's horrific!

I think in terms of quantity of noise all the spitz breeds are up there, but in decibels it takes a lot to beat a gsd

The racing club I used to go to also done beagle racing, the noise was amazing but they all had a great time, I feel if they saved their wind, made less noise they'd run faster
- By corgilover [gb] Date 12.07.20 12:44 UTC
Once at a championship show we were benched in a tent with over four hundred dogs a mix of huskys, malamute and samyoeds try that for noise we lasted about ten minutes before we moved

There is a beagle that lives near me. All the time it is walking down the road it constantly bays at apparently nothing.
Of the six GSDs I have owned only one, the first one, was noisy. This was mostly when I was not at home. The rest only barked when there was a reason such as somebody at the door. In fact the last one I had didn't bark at all until she was about three and then rarely. I think before then she didn't feel the need as the older GSDs and my daughters border collie (the noisy one in the household) did all the barking necessary. It was only after the death of the older GSDs she started to bark. She looked so shocked the first time she did it.

Basenjis (they might not bark but, by crikey, they can scream!) or Miniature Schnauzers must be high up the list of noisy breeds!

A pack hound that runs 'mute' would be disposed of; they're supposed to be vocal to keep the pack together and going in the same direction!
- By MamaBas [gb] Date 12.07.20 15:15 UTC Upvotes 1
Too right re Basenjis.   Being benched next to them I almost always went home with a raging headache when at an indoor show.

"A pack hound that runs 'mute' would be disposed of; they're supposed to be vocal to keep the pack together and going in the same direction! "
Ditto with the Basset, but at least their voices are deep    There's nothing like a Basset pack in fully cry, imo.

Shetland sheepdogs take some beating and most certainly more than all the GSD’s we have owned.
- By bek [gb] Date 12.07.20 20:52 UTC
I have 4 GSDs and they rarely bark! But they can be excited screamers, which is loud
- By compassion Date 14.07.20 08:14 UTC
While walking my dog, passing people's gardens, a DOBERMAN always makes me jump (he almost gives me a 'heart attack' every time)
- By RozzieRetriever Date 14.07.20 11:11 UTC
Same for me with a GSD, gets me every time as it hides in the bushes alongside the road. The dogs don’t turn a hair, but I leap about six foot in the air! It’s worse when I remember to expect it.
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 14.07.20 20:20 UTC
Some of my Cavaliers are pretty gobby :-D And although they might not be as shrill as some breeds, they are surprisingly loud for their size!
- By malwhit [gb] Date 15.07.20 12:14 UTC
I was always told Mini Schnauzers were noisy but two out of the three I owned were no different to any other dogs I owned. The third was noisy, but I didn't get her until 18 months old.

She got better as she got older, but I always said she barked before she thought!

Griffons, defo ::roll:

Which breeds can we identify though (without seeing them) just by their bark ....?

Not a bark but I know when I take a bus over (I'm a driver) if there is a staffy on it, they all whinge and whine on the bus, it's quite distinctive!

GSDs!  And staffies, yes!

GSD's, Cavaliers, and of course Beagles. Arrooo!

Interestingly my papillon tends to woowoowoo rather than bark, it’s a little bit like a baying hound in miniature. And it makes people laugh to hear that noise coming from such a tiny fluffy little thing!

He can of course bark normally but rarely does.
- By Nikita [gb] Date 22.07.20 08:26 UTC
My mali does that!  Not really got a proper bark on her.
- By Whatdog [gb] Date 22.07.20 10:56 UTC
One thing that I have missed during the recent period of not leaving the house is my Westie's excited, high pitched woowoowoo when I come home from work.
