Topic Dog Boards / Health / White Discharge At End of Season
- By chipmunk [gb] Date 03.07.20 14:19 UTC
My 9 year old Rottie is coming to the end of her season. Yesterday, and today I've noticed a white discharge, (no smell). I spoke to my vet who basically said she's heading towards a pyo, and it's not worth doing anything yet! Advice please

Slightly confused if your vet thinks it's the start of pyo I would want him to deal.with it now not later

If it is pyo you need to know and an ultrasound will show this. If it is it can easily be treated in the early stages with antibiotics and know some have been treated with Alizin too. Many want to head straight to spaying, that should be a last resort or if it is an emergency

Thanks both. I am going to speak to him again, and ask for an ultrasound so that we know what we are dealing with. Incidentially, I've had a 12 year old bitch treated sucessfully with Alizin in the past.

I don't think I would leap to any treatment or diagnosis yet (depending on how much discharge of course). My bitches often have a touch of white discharge now and then, which can be slight vaginitis that resolves itself as the pH of the vagina sorts itself out again after a heat cycle. I just keep an eye on it but it's never developed into anything...

I frankly think that most vets really don't know anything about intact dogs and what is normal discharge and will scream pyo at anything whatsoever. I had one owner whose dog was at the vet for a routine check up and the vet felt her stomach doing an exam (as vets do) and said that the uterus felt swollen and she must be on the way to a pyo and they should spay etc etc, so they happily spayed her on the vet's advice. No ultrasound or anything, just seemingly something felt puffy on a physical exam. So I kinda give up really...

How is your bitch in herself, discharge regardless?   She'd be thirsty and running a fever if this is a Pyo.   However, not to rule that out.

If she's 9 now, I'd be getting her spayed mid-way between this season and the next so you don't have to worry about this!!

Thanks everyone for your advice. Cookie had an ultrasound yesterday, which is showing early stages of pyo. So we have booked her in to be spayed.

Sorry to hear that (the Pyo) but it's a good job it was an open one, so you noticed the discharge.  Fingers crossed for her spay surgery.

What were her blood results? A dog with pyo will usually have a marked elevation of white blood cells and globulins could also be elevated.

Unless the vet is very experienced, I'd still be wary of an ultrasound claiming to show early stages of pyo without the blood results to support it. But as she is 9yo, I agree with others that you might be wanting to spay her anyway at this age so it's not such a tricky decision as if she were a young dog or a dog you wanted to breed from in future.

Thank you all for you advice, and comments. Cookie was spayed yesterday (confirmed as pyo), thankfully all went well.
