Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Kennel Name help!
- By Francesca1 [gb] Date 02.07.20 20:49 UTC
I have applied for a Kennel Name - all of my choices so far have been rejected.
I decided to try a kennel affix that my late grandmother had 50+ years ago.
Having looked online at the name check it says that my chosen name is already a Kennel Name. Is there any way I can find out who the name belongs to? Having Googled excessively, nothing comes up other than my grandmothers dog at Crufts in 1967!!!  Or in those days did you get the affix for life?? In which case can I apply to have it? At my wits end!!! TIA

I don't think you can re-use an old kennel affix, I think it has to be transferred on, so it may not be in use as such, but has been used.  Once you get an affix granted you pay an annual fee to keep that affix.  I think I got my third choice when I got my affix granted.

Does anyone know how long the process is taking at the moment? Have applied, but the suggested usual time frame has long gone.

Not a clue!  If you're wanting it verified sooner rather than later it may be worth giving them a call.  I've always found the KC really helpful when phoning them about anything

Have you called them to see if its still in her name as back then you often paid for an affix which is life long. If that is the case you can apply to transfer it into your name

I was going to say the same ask if it's still active.
If it's not you might be able to get it by paying for it can't remember what they call it though.

Ask the kennel club about the kennel name bequest service or reinstating it.

The situatiion with Kennel names, already granted, can be difficult.   When we came back from Canada, having registered one over there (the Roman name of the city we lived close to back in the UK), I already knew there was somebody in the UK with the same name, another breed.   There is no reciprocal agreement between the KCs across the world so I contacted the KC here to see what the situation was with that affix, and was told it was still 'active'.   I wrote to the individuals, who were no longer breeding, but was told they were happy that the KC had not granted 'their' affix BUT they would be prepared to sign it over to me for a four-figure sum.    It was quite a nasty letter and to as for that kind of money - well suffice to say, we had to choose another name which was kind-of similar.  I never felt we were that name!!  And of course, those we came back with, bred by us, carried the Canadian name - which would be bound to be difficult for anybody researching pedigrees.   Not that many 'new' people do that

Many people were able to permanently register their names, in the past - and of course, significant affixes within a breed, were protected.

I can't imagine how easy it would be to find something unique to use these days.  There has to be a limit to how many made-up names including part of each couples' names so good luck finding something you like and is accepted!

Francesca1 ...You will need to contact the KC to give them the info you have given us. It maybe that affix(now called Kennel Name) has been protected (usually by a breed club) but that process I know the next of kin will be involved in the process to give permission for the affix to be transferred from the holder to the club(protector). Had this happened I guess you would know about it?

If the affix(Kennel Name) wasn't protected, it maybe that someone else has applied to use it, at some point after & it has been granted.

Like I say, you will need to contact KC to get an answer either way.

That's just awful!

Not quite the same, but I had to buy one of my dogs from an ex, I'd stupidly put her in joint names even though I paid for her.

Thank you everyone - I contacted KC this morning and they have confirmed that the affix is still owned by my deceased grandmother. I have to send them her death certificate and a letter from the executor of estate (which is my father luckily!) confirming he is happy to transfer it to me.

I know! Wish I’d thought about it before but really hope they will change ownership now as I really want to carry on her legacy. She showed German Shepherds back in the day and me Cocker Spaniels so hoping that the change in breed will help too!
