Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / My Dog(female) mated with a stray dog
- By Neha Choudhary [in] Date 29.06.20 06:50 UTC
My female labrador aged 2 years now, it is her 14th day of heat and she got mated with a stray dog I saw it, they didn't tie but mating took place. I don't want her to go through any trouble. I don't know what's best for her now to keep the puppies or abort them. Please help me. We can be sure of pregnancy on 28th day from now, but alizin given in 22 days is 100% effective. So what should I do? What happens if the dog is not preganant and given alizin? Or should I get her spayed? But it's very risky I think. I live in India so if she gives birth to puppies there's no one who's gonna take them or adopt them. I don't want a bad life for them and my girl. Suggest the right thing to do.

If this was my situation, I'd have her straight in for a gravid spay so this can never be able to happen again.

I definitely would not keep the puppies. There are already so many stray and unwanted dogs around. And day 14 is in the most common fertile period for dogs.

I would give her the Alizin injection if you have access to it. I believe it's most effective if you wait until her heat ends: "To reduce the possibility of lack of expected efficacy, avoid the use of Alizin until after the end of oestrus and avoid new mating before the end of oestrus."

Here is more information about how to use it: https://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/?id=-459939

She might throw up or have runny poop for a day, but the side effects are unlikely to go beyond that.

If Alizin isn't available where you live, then for sure you should get her spayed. You might want to consider that anyway, to prevent this happening again....

We don't have good vets here, no clean hospitals. We tried to spay her before but the vets won't agree, they say there is no need for it. That's why using alizin looks like the only option.

Great! We don't even have alizin in India! I don't know what am I gonna do now.

Can it be obtained from abroad if vet gives a prescription?
Is it worth discussing spay now with the vet if u can find one who u think is able to do the OP safely ?

Can your vet import it in? Yes it will cost but it's what I would be asking for.
There must be some way to get it into the country?
Otherwise I would be finding a vet that would spay her now, you don't want pups, its not like these are going to be purebred Labs either.
It may mean you need to travel with her and if safe and allowed then I would consider this for her welfare too

The vet service in our country isn't that much advanced as you guys think. It's nearly impossible to import it. The vet is saying let her have the puppies and then give them away to others. I am searching everything online, and found "cloprostenol" which can be used, but the link says hospitalization required. If I can do it at home then I'll give her this drug as the side effects are minimal and it's available in my country.

I'd really try to travel to a vet who can spay her.   are there any animal rescue charities working in your part of India?- may be worth talking to them as they may know of vets capable of doing the surgery.

aside from pregnancy as an entire bitch she is always at risk of a uterine infection requiring an emergency spay to save her life- if its this hard to find a vet when got time it would be impossible when you on a few hours time limit.

I know govt. Vets but they won't do it and due to covid-19 restrictions we can't travel anywhere. I'm asking some of my friends who are far for the combination therapy of drugs. Later if restrictions are lifted we'll take her to some big city where private vets would spay her. But right now I need the best in this condition. You guys have no idea about the situation here there is no adoption centres in India, the dog live's value or for that matter any animals life doesn't hold such value.

I wouldn't spay now; the side-effects are too risky. I'd give Alizin at the end of her season and then spay in 3 months.
- By Neha Choudhary [in] Date 29.06.20 12:43 UTC
I wish I could do that. But alizin isn't available in my country and there's no way for me to get it imported from abroad. I'm trying fro combination therapy of cloprostenol and cabergoline, they have less side effects and maybe there is a chance I'll get them here. I just need some willing vet to help me and let me know it's right.

could you phone one of the city vets and see if they have suitable drugs and post it you? (presuming mail is working)

I'm trying to go to the capital of my state if permitted so I can see some private vet in person and get the drugs, might take 3-4 days but I'll try everything possible. They mated for like 10-15 seconds so I need to tell the vet everything in detail if I find a willing vet who'll help.

Good luck it's a really hard situation and with the restrictions bought about by covid has made an already difficult situation worse for.you.  you are right we cant really imagine how things are it's so different to the UK
I hope you can work something out or she ismt actually pregnant
- By Neha Choudhary [in] Date 29.06.20 13:49 UTC
I'm really hoping for that.
- By suejaw Date 29.06.20 14:17 UTC
Good luck, let us know how you get on
- By onetwothreefour Date 29.06.20 15:08 UTC
Can a vet in India order some Alizin in? You do have time on your side, as she has to finish her heat cycle before you can even give it - and it is effective for many weeks into pregnancy, so you have time to sort something out...

Alternatively it might be worth paying for a Zoom consultation with a reproductive vet in the US so you can find out combinations of drugs to use. If you can find a vet in India who will consult via Zoom with a repro specialist in the US.

@ Jeangenie.    There are risks involved in a gravid spay, but no more than allowing her to go to full term and whelp.   Provided the vet is told she may be in whelp, what better than to spay so she doesn't have to continue with the pregnancy, and whelp the litter, and raise them to an uncertain future if good homes are not out there!   They will be mutts in any case and how many of them must there be in India?   If OP can't access Alizin, then she doesn't have another option.   Again provided the vet is aware of her condition, she should be fine.

The vet gave me this durg prescription and said I need to start it today only else it won't be effective-
Inj Diethylstilbestrol 1ml i/m on alternate day for 3 shots
Inj aciloc 2 ml i/m
Inj perinorm 2ml i/m
Tab nutririch od for 1 month
But I did my research and diethylstilbestrol have major toxic side effects like bone marrow suppression, pyometra. I'm not sure to give to my girl.

I hate to say it but if she was mated by some local stray, it's totally possible for her to have a Pyo in any case.   In which case she will most likely need to be spayed .....................
- By Neha Choudhary [in] Date 30.06.20 10:32 UTC
What do you mean she'll get pyo in any case? Even if we abort? Or if she have the puppies?
- By mixedpack [gb] Date 30.06.20 10:41 UTC Upvotes 1
I would do everything possible to get her spayed, not ideal if she is in whelp but much better than adding to the massive problem in India, could you find a charity to help you access a vet, I do appreciate your awful situation and there is always the hope that puppies will not result from a short mating with no tie.
- By Neha Choudhary [in] Date 30.06.20 10:49 UTC
I want to get her spayed but there's no vet willing to do right now. I've worked for a NGO myself, Vets aren't helping around here. They won't do it in normal condition, now if they think she is pregnant they won't even think about it. I don't know what to do now!
- By Neha Choudhary [in] Date 30.06.20 11:11 UTC
How much time I've got to get her spayed? The deadline? It's her 15th day of heat
- By suejaw Date 30.06.20 16:40 UTC
Where is the nearest vet to you who would spay? I dont know your restrictions in India but can you drive or fly her to a vet who will? I have no idea if flights into another country are possible, yes this seems extreme but you clearly want to make sure she doesn't have pups whether that means Alizin in another country or spay in yours or across a border. Bloody cv19 is making life very difficult for you and many others
