I have to replace my current electric hob in the very near future and am thinking of getting an induction one. I would prefer a gas hob but there is no supply and hubby refuses to consider LPG. Do any CDers have an induction hob and what do you think of them? What is the best type of saucepan to use?

gosh...I thought this was going to be a question about ferrets!
Sorry....know nothing about cookers!

LOL, I don't think I could keep a ferret still for long enough to cook on it!;)

I've got one and wouldn't be without it! I've been using it for about three years now. Unfortunately, the saucepans are more expensive, but I used my old ones until I bought the correct ones without any problem. I love the fact that you can just wipe it and it's clean. A tip is to buy a glass scraper to get rid of burnt on residue easily.

Not very technical ! Is this the same/similar to a halogen hob. I have had a 4 ring halogen hob for 16 years. They were quite new then. It has been brilliant, no problems at all - none of the halogen bulbs has gone and cleaning is brilliant. As we may be redoing the kitchen when we are sure that pup has finished chewing it :) have been looking at suitable replacements, but was dismayed to find that there are no cookers with 4 halogen rings. Is the induction same/better ?

Induction is the best thing ever!! :D
Its so easy to clean and its very safe too. Even has a child lock the touch buttons, so can only be turned on in a specific combination
The plate only gets warm if actually in contact with the pan.
You can set it to a specific temp. and everything.
Absolutely brilliant *stops the ranting and raving*

Where did you get yours ? They only seem to have fairly basic cookers at the nearest Comet etc.

Well for now I can only admire the induction hob from a distance.
Its actually my mother who owns it. She's Dutch (like me funny enough) and the induction is becoming fairly common overthere.
I have been trying to find one myself in the UK as well, but like you, no luck.
Halogen is about the closest you can get to it.
I've already decided to just bring one over when I save up enough money for a new kitchen, as they are just so much better than
anything else. The manufacturer MIELE or Bosch do them.
My mum uses SS pans that still look brand new and she's been using the induction for a while now.

I still use the same stainless steel pans that I bought in 1978 when I left home. I got them in a 'cheap' household goods shop. Funny thing was that when I met my husband, he had practically the same pans, except made by Prestige - also bought in 1978. All six are still going strong today and are very shiny and new looking, except that the black knobs/handles are starting to crack through being put in the dishwasher. Hopefully I'll be able to use them 'if' I get an induction hob :) :)

Thanks to you all for helping me make up my mind over induction. I was a bit concerned that they might not be as good as advertised, but you have set my mind at rest and I am determined to have one! :D Quite a few firms seem to be doing them now including Belling, AEG, Bosch etc, and there seem to be different layouts of heat zones. I will have to go to a large kitchen appliance place to see them all and make up my mind. I think I will also persuade hubby that I need stainless steel pans - those Le Creuset are very heavy and over 30 years old (I got them from my mother when she could not lift them any more) and a change is now required.

Hi again,
Most companies don't have them on show but browse on line and call the maufactures for a brouchure if you want a better look.. . Best makes of these products are Neff and Bosch.
Pots yes another of my fetishes we bought the le Creusets also and although my hubby likes them I am sure they are made for murder weapons LOL I can't lift them..
We have had recent success ( 2 years) with John lewis's pots now I can remember the trade name but it is actually John Lewis's brand ( could be Joliene or something like that) they are lovely shinny chrome on the outside but none stick on the inside.. I have not burnt a thing since I got them LOL.. that is good believe me. and they look very nice on my hob LOL ( Sad Cow I know)

What kind of pans do you use on your induction hob? I have cast iron at the moment but am finding them a bit on the heavy side, not to mention worry of scratching/cracking the hob surface.
Jean

Sorry, I forgot about this thread! The pans suitable for induction hobs tend to be stainless steel with "encapsulated bases" (whatever that is :) ) You can buy suitable pans easily from Argos where they indicate the correct ones.

Hi there,
After fitting 8 kitchens in 12 years with just about every variety of cooking appliances, ranges duel fuels the works.. I will now never have anything but an induction hob... it cooks quickly, evenly and they are nice and easy to clean.. I can't stand dirty cookers LOL..
The real induction ones not halogen or ceramic are more expensive but worth it in my opinion.
The cheapest place to buy them in the UK is
http://www.trade-appliances.co.uk the one I have just fitted is the 900 wide one by neff it was a pricey item but not only looks nice is really good.

Thanks Pamela, went out and bought a hob yesterday, a 900 wide Siemens one - it looks lovely. Can't wait for it to arrive :D
Siemens were also offering a free stainless steel pan set with every induction hob sold, so I will be set up as soon as it is fitted. It didn't affect our choice as the salesman didn't tell us until after we made our decision, so it came as a nice little extra surprise.

You'll be all posh Jean... :-)

Jean,
I may have come into this topic too late to be anything but irritating :D, but would be interesting to know what model number and how much you're paying? Email address is marina.jeyes@siemens.com (hint as to why I'm asking the question in the email address ........) if you want to do it privately.
Mind you, the freebie pans may override the irritation factor in this case, but if I can get a major reduction for you and if you might have a 'cooling off period' where you can cancel your order, feel free to email me.

Lara, crazy
Both of these Co.s are quite good but you have to watch delivery charges etc.
The One you linked Lara I looked at a while back but with the delivery charges I was £90 better off with TA the other link..
But it does pay for us all to shop around finding each other deals :-) champdeals..

"ChampDeals" :D I like it, Pam! :)
