Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Appetite after birth.

Hello,  so as during her pregnancy my girl has not followed the patterns of any of my others post birth. From two weeks post mating her appetite has been through the roof, which from week 8 reduced essentially to nothing with mild grazing leading up to the birth. My girl has only gained 3.5KG whilst pregnant so trusting her with the volume of food she wanted from week 6 was the right choice.

My issue now is since birth of her gorgeous 6 puppies(3 days old) she is still hardly eating, I’ve experienced this with my other girls for max 24/48 hours post birth. I can get her to eat puppy wet food but only 5/6 of the small pouches a day.. she’s a  large breed dog. She seems happy and content, puppies doing well... do I just leave her to it and accept she’s not that hungry or should I be more concerned?

I'd be concerned that she could be retaining birthing material, or even a puppy who didn't make it.   Have you talked to your vet?

I wouldn't worry if everything else seems ok.  When pups are that tiny they are not consuming much - they are full after almost nothing at all.  It's not much work for the bitch's body to produce the milk for them.  It's a different story as they get bigger!  It's likely she is recovering after whelping and her appetite will return.

It's more important to be sure she is drinking enough rather than eating, so I would be thinking more about ensuring she is drinking.  You can boil some liver up and give her the water from that, to encourage drinking more.

I'm sure her appetite will return in the next few days, it's normal for some bitches to be off their food for a bit afterwards.

I hand feed my bitches in the whelping box straight after birthing.  Chicken, steak, tuna - anything to ensure they eat.  I would never get them eating if I just gave their normal food, and it's important that you feed in the whelping box, not expecting her to move far yet.

She won’t eat at all in the box, she’s obsessed with it being perfectly clean, right little diva! I’ve blended wet puppy food with puppy biscuits and some water so it’s like wet weetabix and she’s eaten that thankfully, hopefully her Appetite will pick up in next few days
