Hi all not sure if I’m writing this in the right place but I am looking for any advice anyone has
So my girl has 7 adorable babies all doing very very well
Our next door Neighbour has told us they are going to be letting fireworks off for ther little girls birthday
I am very worried for my girl as she don’t like fireworks at all! Especially now she’s got her baby’s
Is ther anything I can do for her while this is going on?
Any advice is highly appreciated

Ask what time they'll be setting them off, if you haven't already, so you can prepare.  I'd be tempted to just mention the pups and how much you appreciate being warned, because mama will be frightened.  They might be a bit more aware then about how long it goes on for.

Then ramp those volumes up as much as you can for the duration, just before it's due.  Choose something to put on that will provide near constant noise: I find blockbuster movies a good choice as most have an almost constant score.  It would be worth asking the vet if there's anything you can safely give a nursing mum, too.

If your girl gets really panicked by fireworks I'd remove her from the pups just before the fireworks are due to start, I know this will stress her out too but I wouldn't want to risk the pups getting injured if she's likely to panic dig to try to hide.

Don't know if it would be feasible but maybe put them all in large box/crate in the car with hot water bottles if needed and get the h*** out of there for ½ hr or however long. 10 minutes down the road would probably be far enough.

Moving her and her pups might be one answer, but that would depend on which would stress her (and the puppies) more - staying put with curtains closed and radio/TV on slightly louder than normal, or moving them all to the car etc.   bearing in mind very young puppies can't regulate their own temperature.   Likewise how she reacts - removing her from her puppies might upset her more than the fireworks!!

On balance I'd stay put.   Do find out when it's all going to kick off tho - and make sure you get her out to empty well beforehand.

Why do people think they NEED to let off these blasted things!!

I'm glad they let you know, but I hope you told them the situation and that mum will be upset .......... nods as good as a wink eh.

It depends how she normally reacts to fireworks, which is why I said "if she really panics". I've had dogs that just look a bit worried, maybe pant a bit at fireworks, fine, but I've also had several (collies) that panic so much they try and hide at all costs, digging through sofas and walls, completely oblivious to my attempts to calm them, if she's going to panic like that she probably shouldn't be in with the pups.

When is the event? I've had great results with Xylkene, it's milk powder based I think so I can't imagine it does any harm to lactating bitch but check with your vet. Unfortunately it takes a week or so to build up so may not be any good in these circumstances. When I had collies I would start them on xylkene mid october to get them through fireworks season.

These days it is possible to get good quality low noise fireworks. If you get on well with your neighbour I guess you could ask if they are going for this option? Best of luck. What a hassle.

My dog is petrified of fireworks, and unfortunately we’ve had them every Thursday at 8pm. I thought it was clap for carers, not petrify pets and wild life.
