Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Neutering 8 weeks?

Just seen something alarming on one of the advertising sites. American bulldog litter offering to neuter puppies at 8 weeks as “other male dogs won’t feel threatened”.

I know this is far from recommended. My question being, is it actually allowed and would any vet do this? Should I report the advert on welfare grounds?

Sadly it is legal, but very few vets would do it. Always worth reporting though because it's such an ethically wrong thing to do, and will predispose the animal to many serious conditions in the future.

Its  not at all uncommon in america and i have seen breeders who will automatically
neuter male and female before selling

as jeangenie said it isn't something many vets would do here .thank goodness

as for less threatening to other dogs .what rubbish and the likelihood of  health issues early neutering is now known to increase is many

Unfortunately as it isn't illegal I very much doubt anyone will be concerned about such an  advert . Someone must believe they have a vet who will do the procedure:(

Unfortunately many Shelters (UK) will do this (still?), especially spaying, saying it's nowhere near such a big op as when the bitch is older...... I guess it's because all too often, new owners say they will have the surgery done when 'normal', but don't.

From experience, I've found a castrated male is often more likely to be targetted by an entire male not less, because they can't work out what it is!!  And then there's the growth plate closure issue ......... ete. etc.   I met one Basset who had been castrated at way under a year - so sad for a noble hound, because he remained a 'silly puppy' for life.

Presumably you're in the US?

There are some breeders who do this to pups before they leave.  Australian Labradoodle breeders are notorious for it and won't sell a pup unless they've neutered the pup first.  I think it's abhorrent.  I don't understand how anyone can do it, it makes me sick.  I think it's all about retaining control over who has the dogs and can breed them rather than any concern for health or behaviour.

No I am in the Uk. It’s on one of the UK pet listing websites. I also think it is awful and regardless of whether it is legal it should be!

As some franchises of the RSPCA actively neuter 8 week old male puppies & 10 week old bitch puppies reporting an advert isnt likely to get it withdrawn.

I know the new generation vets are actively encouraged to get puppies neuteted asap by certain Universities as a way of reducing the supposed
excess of puppies being bred supported by the big all breed rescues. They all ignore the contraindications of prepubescent neutering
