Hello all, newbie here

I am looking into health tests for a prospective breeding bitch. For our breed, the recommended tests are

Portosystemic liver shunt
Ocular melanosis
Craniomandibular osteopathy

I discussed this with my vet prior to lockdown who said that was not something they could offer as they don't have an onsite lab and he would look into it for me.

Are there specialist vets who offer this or am I best just asking my normal vet to take bloods and have them send the samples off on my behalf? Apologies for the questions, my mentor only screens for CMO as the others are not a requirement, rather an advisory but I want to be sure that I am doing the best by any prospective litters and want to reduce any probability of poorly dogs

Thank you

Is there anything on your breed club website at all? Are any of them DNA tests? If so then try Laboklin which is one such lab

The eye test should be done by at a BVA eye clinic. Go onto their website and clinics and vets who can do this and their locations on there. All currently on hold for now

My understanding for liver shunt is the pups are tested with a bile acid test.. taken from Google.. have you spoken to a breeder in your breed who does test for these things? I have a fair idea now what breed you have and know someone who does liver shunt test their pups and another breeder in a different breed who liver shunt the litter too.

Diagnosis of Portosystemic Shunts
Increased bile acids or ammonia or presence of ammonium urate crystals in a puppy with clinical signs of hepatic encephalopathy is suggestive of portosystemic shunting. On plain abdominal radiographs, a small liver may be seen.

Thank you for your reply.

I have looked at the breed club, the latest health report is from 2018. The KC don't have a breed health coordinator for my breed at the moment.
I will put the feelers out and see if somebody can point me in the right direction. I had a look at the BVA this morning. Perhaps once covid 19 has passed (fingers crossed) I will be able to give them a call for a chat.
I just want to do things the right way if that makes sense. God forbid I bred a litter and all pups got sick with liver shunt at 2 years old

Your vet should be able to do the acid bile test on the litter when old enough
