Has anyone had any experience of this? My puppy has been referred to RVC next week to investigate urine leakage.
Yes. Ours was treated with laser ablation by Laura Owen in Cambridge, this procedure is only suitable if the ureters are intramural, extramural ectopic ureters need more invasive surgery. Some places do not offer laser ablation in any case and will only do the more invasive procedure.
I have a bitch who is almost 13 who was born with it, she had surgery at 4 months and hasn't had a problem since, although I was advised never to spay her but she developed a pyo so that decision was taken away from me, she hasn't been too good since surgery although not EU related
Thank you for your time in replying. How did they detect the ectopic ureta? What’s a pyo? I’m sorry she hasn’t been well since surgery. X
Thank you for your reply. I will see what the royal veterinary college say next week. What tests do they carry out to see if it is ectopic ureter? X
They will scan her and will diagnose from there.
From about 3 weeks she leaked urine. She had scans etc and they operated the same day. Pyo is an infection of the womb usually several weeks after a season, life threatening situation.
What are your dogs symptoms?
Do they have to sedate them to scan them?
I first noticed that he had a skin irritation and that the fur round his bits was wet/damp. They tested his urine and no signs of urine infection, he had antibodies to clear Tp the skin which it has done but she wants a referral done so we are going to RVC next week for urine leakage.
Unusual for a male pup but it does happen. Maisie had a general to check her as sometimes they inject dye too
He’s only five months and is usually pretty good going out for wees, sometimes he gets excited and wees but I notice when he’s asleep he sometimes leaks, the most obvious way of noticing this is the fur as it looks damp.
Hi, my 18 week old puppy (female) is also showing symptoms of ectopic urethra. She is a chocolate lab cross with a chow.
When I first had her at 13. 5 weeks I did notice that her bedding was damp, she had small wet patches where she was lying or sitting. I thought it was as she was young but at 16 weeks she started squatting everywhere every 2 minutes and she had a 5 day course of antibiotics from the vet, and they tested her urine she had an infection. The urine dripping seemed to stop for a day or 2. After the 5 days, 2 days later she started doing it again so they had her in overnight to collect a urine sample directly from her bladder. Her bladder is so small it took all night and morning to fill up enough. They did an ultrasound and noted that one of her kidneys is slightly enlarged, they said this could just be her make up and not relevant but something to keep in mind.
Once the culture comes back I'll know more but for now I'm trying to find out everything I can and so I'm following your post. Let's just hope they class this as essential if it comes to them needing surgery x

Didn't the scan they did reveal an ectopic urether ? It's the usual first tool in investigation of possible ectopic urether.
The condition is quite rare BTW
No, the ultrasound was for them to see her bladder and kidneys I think they need dye and xray to see the pipes. X
I've brought Carrie for her 2nd vaccination and the vet has had the results of the culture through, there is E coli in her bladder. I'm really hoping that's the cause.

Er no if the scanned her kidneys & bladder they should have also scanned her ureter as well. It is not necesssry to use a dye or x ray. I wonder if they have not treated or diagnosed the condition before
Possibly if it's very rare they might not have. They said it will cost around £1700 to look properly and operate if necessary, but they might have to refer her to a specialist.

I would be looking for a referral if she were mine and the vet isn't confident of what the problem is or does not have experience In this area
The comments. u have made about small bladder and small kidney seems strange
It may mean nothing but I would want confirmation of exactly what the issue is and if there is anything more than a urine infection.
Of course if it is a urine infection now they have identified the bacterium she can be give a targeted antibiotic which may answer the issue .if not as above I would be looking at a specialist
Is she insured because hopefully she is as that will help with costs

Are you sure it's urine and not something else given he's starting puberty now.
